Whilst the available information is not precise and changes every year based on the performance of the cohort, you should consider the score to be about 25. Naturally, the average for a successful candidate will be higher.
Open UniversityTo apply to Oxford, students would need to have completed, or be studying for, at least 120 points at stage 1 or above, in appropriate subjects. We would expect students to be performing at the highest level, with at least pass grade 2.
Marking criteriaTypical BMAT candidates will score around 5.0, roughly half marks. The best candidates will score around 6.0, and a few exceptional candidates will score higher than 7.0. Writing Tasks in Section 3 are marked by two examiners.
The maximum mark for the paper is 60. Each script is marked by two examiners. Each examiner gives a mark out of 30, and the two marks are combined to give an overall mark out of 60. The full range of marks will be used.
The 'average applicant' to UCL generally scores of 4.5-5 on sections 1 and 2, as well as roughly 3.2 Grade A on section 3.
Aside from doing practice papers, available on the ELAT website, there are a few things that you can do to prepare:
- Read widely and read actively.
- Read critical works and learn from their style.
- Understand the rudiments of poetic analysis.
How to register for ELAT
- You need to be registered as a candidate by a test centre (you cannot register yourself for the test).
- You must take the test at a test centre that is authorised to run Admissions Testing tests (for most candidates this is their own school or college).

The applicants need to produce documents of at least one of the following exams with the set standard score- IELTS, TOEFL, CAE, GCSE, English Language O-level, International Baccalaureate Standard Level or European Baccalaureate. You need an outstanding grade in these exams to secure your admission in Oxford.
For Indian students, the basic eligibility requirement for admission to an undergraduate program at Oxford University is a 10+2 qualification from CBSE or ISC with minimum 90% marks in each of the five subjects opted.
The Oxford MLAT – How to prepare
- Revise the grammar you have studied as part of your IB/A Level course. Make sure you know all the basics but also review exceptions to the rules.
- Revise vocabulary.
- Complete some past papers for practice.
Candidates will receive a score from 1.0 to 5.0, with 3.0 being the average score in the cohort and slightly more than half the students receiving a 3.0 or higher. In general, 4.0 is a strong score and 5.0 is outstanding and rarely seen.
Remember that the average BMAT candidate scores in the region of 5.0. The best applicants will score more highly, but 6.0 represents a comparatively high score and only a select few exceptional applicants will achieve BMAT scores higher than 7.0.
What if I fail? Unlike most tests that you will have previously done, the BMAT has no pass or fail threshold. You simply have to do the very best you can, and you will be graded accordingly. The reason there isn't a pass or fail threshold is because different institutions use the result in different ways.
Because of the date of the exam and the early submission requirement on UCAS, unlike with the UCAT, you won't know your BMAT score prior to applying for a medical school. To minimise this risk, and given the BMAT is harder than the UCAT, I'd recommend not making more than two of your four choices BMAT schools.
However, the BMAT cut-off scores from previous admissions cycles may be used as a guide. For 2019 entry, the minimum scores required were: a score of 4.1 in section 1; a score of 4.2 in section 2; a score of 2.5 and grade C in section 3.
People usually take the UKCAT and BMAT in the summer of year 12 and the beginning of year 13, and it's common for students to take both tests when applying to medical school, so knowing the timeline is invaluable: 18th of August: New BMAT September registration deadline. 9th of September: New BMAT test date.
The official BMAT website says that typical candidates will score around 5.0, but the best candidates will score around 6.0 and exceptional candidates will score higher than 7.0.
?? Is the BMAT 2021 online? Due to delays caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the September BMAT is cancelled and all candidates will sit the exam in November. You cannot take the exam at home and must take the test at a centre that is authorised.
