Part 2Selecting a Type of Camera
- Purchase a DSLR if you're a serious hobbyist or a professional.
- Select a DSLR for complete control over the process of taking photos.
- Buy a point-and-shoot if you'd like a cheap camera that's easy to use.
- Opt for a point-and-shoot if you want a bare-bones, inexpensive camera.
The main difference between the two is the autofocus. With Canon, all the EOS lenses will autofocus whereas, with Nikon, only the AF-S lenses do. If you want your Nikon lens to autofocus, you need to choose an AF-S lens. They feel that Canon professional cameras are the best choice in the battle of Nikon vs Canon.
Here are four great reasons to choose a point-and-shoot camera over your smartphone camera.
- Larger sensor for better image quality.
- Optical zoom for better-quality close-ups.
- Rugged point-and-shoot cameras can take a beating.
- Physical controls.

A DSLR (a digital SLR) is a Single Lens Reflex camera. That means the camera has a mirror, a mirror flipping mechanism, and a pentaprism/pentamirror, and a live through the lens viewfinder. SLRs are specifically designed to give you a live view through through the lens in the viewfinder. DSLRs can also shoot RAW.

DSLR. (Digital Single Lens Reflex) A digital still image camera that uses a single lens reflex (SLR) mechanism. Most professional cameras were analog single lens reflex until digital SLRs emerged in the early 1990s. Following are the two major advantages of DSLRs.
The SX400 doesn't include Wi-Fi. If you want to be able to transfer images to your smartphone, you'll have to add an Eyefi Mobi memory card. But, by the time you've spent the extra money on an Eyefi card, you might as well just buy a model with built-in Wi-Fi like the Canon SX700 HS or Nikon Coolpix S9700.
Canon powershot sx420 is a bridge camera and has a fixed lens. The lens is integrated into the body and cannot be replaced. You will need to upgrade to a DSLR to interchange lenses. The lens provided in sx420 is a wide to telephoto zoom and covers all the focal lengths commonly used for portraits.
The Canon SX50 HS is an ultrazoom camera with very good overall image quality. The fifth generation Canon PowerShot SX50 HS is an entry-level DSLR-sized point and shoot digital camera that is essentially an evolutionary update; however, at least one of the new features seems almost revolutionary.
Digital Single Reflex Cameras (DSLRs) are still the go-to option for many such budding photographers, and remain the weapon of choice for professionals. Today, if you are an amateur and on the lookout for a professional camera to satisfy your urge to shoot high quality images, you don't need a DSLR.
Better investment.
Generally, DSLR cameras hold their values much better than point and shoots. Although no digital camera can be considered a good investment, chances of selling your DSLR at a reasonably good price are much higher than even a slightly used point and shoot camera. Those generally won't produce much better results than your smartphone, so it's worth spending a little more money on something that will. I recommend an entry-level DSLR or mirrorless camera that accepts interchangeable lenses. (Here's a good resource on the tradeoffs between DSLR and mirrorless cameras.)
not a DSLR) and if you see something with the lens cap removed and nothing with it on then it is a DSLR. If you see nothing with the lens cap off then it doesn't have an optical viewfinder and if you see something with the lens cap on then it is a rangefinder or TLR camera.
A DSLR, by contrast, reflects the light into your eye, which is better than the camera sensor at low light. So, if you are shooting mostly in good light, both types will perform well. If you are often shooting in low light or other challenging conditions, though, a DSLR will be easier to shoot with.
The DSLR cameras come with an advantage because they have a lens with variable focal length and aperture. It allows them to regulate the amount of light that enters the camera thereby ensuring images of better quality. Smartphone cameras have autofocusing lenses. They can be slow at times and experience shutter lag.
Cameras. Many professional photographers use high-end Canon or Nikon DSLRs, such as a Canon EOS 1DX Mark II or a Nikon D5. These are the crème de la crème of cameras, designed to produce amazing results.
