Lymph node are usually too small to feel except in slim people when they can be felt as smooth pea-sized lumps in the groin. Another common exception is when people get a sore throat or an ear infection, which can make the neck lymph nodes enlarged, painful and tender.
Following infection, lymph nodes occasionally remain permanently enlarged, though they should be non-tender, small (less the 1 cm), have a rubbery consistency and none of the characteristics described above or below. This likely represents sequelae of past pharyngitis or dental infections.

The inguinal lymph nodes are divided into superficial and deep groups. The superficial inguinal nodes drain the anus, the perianal skin, and the round ligament of the uterus. The lymph from the gluteal region and the anterior abdominal wall below the level of the umbilicus also drain to lateral nodes in this group.
The PLNs are a group of lymph nodes that sit just in front of the ears. These lymph nodes filter lymph fluid as it arrives from the scalp, neck, and various parts of the face. The human body contains about 600 small glands called lymph nodes that play an essential role in the function of the immune system.
Using the palms of your hands, start at your forehead, applying gentle pressure to slowly stretch the skin down toward the lymph nodes in your neck. Keep going, moving all the way down your face. Use care around your eyes. For under your eyes, switch to your ring finger and use a rolling movement.
One of these trunks, the right lymphatic duct, drains the upper right portion of the body, returning lymph to the bloodstream via the right subclavian vein. The other trunk, the thoracic duct, drains the rest of the body into the left subclavian vein.
the lymph node is large (greater than 3 centimeters, or 1 1/4 inches); there are other abnormal physical examination findings, e.g., an enlarged liver and/or spleen; the blood count is abnormal; or. the chest x-ray shows enlarged nodes.
Inguinal lymph nodes up to 2 cm in size may be palpable in healthy patients who spend time barefoot outdoors, have chronic leg trauma or infections, or have sexually transmitted infections. However, any lymph node >1 cm in adults should be considered abnormal.
Signs and symptoms
The first sign of Hodgkin lymphoma is usually a painless swelling of one gland, or a group of lymph glands, which continues for some weeks or even months. The first glands that are likely to be affected are in the neck or above the collarbone, most often only on one side.Level II lymph nodes are related to the upper third of the jugular vein, extending from the skull base to the inferior border of the hyoid bone. The posterior border of level II is the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, while the anterior border of level II has been defined as the stylohyoid muscle.
Lymph nodes become swollen in response to illness, infection, or stress. Swollen lymph nodes are one sign that your lymphatic system is working to rid your body of the responsible agents. Swollen lymph glands in the head and neck are normally caused by illnesses such as: skin infection.
A normal sized lymph node is usually less than one cm in diameter. For example, some authors have proposed that an inguinal lymph node size up to 1.5 cm should be considered normal, while the normal range for the epitrochlear nodes is up to 0.5cm.
Common locations of swollen lymph nodes
Most of the causes of swollen lymph nodes in this area are benign (noncancerous) but sometimes swelling of these lymph nodes may also suggest a cancer in the head and neck area. Many cancers including lymphoma and leukemia can cause enlargement of these lymph nodes.Your lymphatic system is a network of organs, vessels and lymph nodes situated throughout your body. Many lymph nodes are located in your head and neck region. Lymph nodes that frequently swell are in this area, as well as in your armpits and groin area.
Level IV: Lower Jugular Group
Lymph nodes located around the lower third of the internal jugular vein extending from the inferior border of the cricoid cartilage (above) to the clavicle (below).If any of the lymph nodes under the arm or around the collar bone are swollen, they may be checked for cancer directly with a needle biopsy, either a fine needle aspiration (FNA) or a core needle biopsy. Less often, the enlarged node is removed with surgery.
The doctor also might order blood tests to look for signs of infection or other problems. Blood tests aren't used to diagnose lymphoma, though. If the doctor suspects that lymphoma might be causing your symptoms, he or she might recommend a biopsy of a swollen lymph node or other affected area.
An enlarged cervical lymph node is the most commonly encountered neck lump. The role of ultrasound is to differentiate pathological nodes (e.g., metastases, lymphoma, tuberculous lymphadenitis) from normal/reactive nodes (Figure 1).
Hodgkin lymphoma can produce itching (pruritus), but the itching usually occurs without an obvious skin rash. Pruritus may be confined to the hands, feet or lower legs, or it can affect the entire body.
For the vast majority of cases, swollen lymph nodes indicate nothing more than the fact that your body is fighting off an infection. However, because of this, swollen lymph nodes can easily be mistaken as harmless when in fact they could be a warning sign of something more serious, such as blood cancer.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can evaluate the breasts and breast cancer related areas such as axillary lymph nodes, skin or pectoral muscle that are important for prognosis.
Overall, 34% (117 of 342) of biopsies showed malignant disease, either lymphoreticular (19%; 64 of 342) or metastatic (15%; 53 of 342), and 15% (52 of 342) tuberculous lymphadenitis. Forty-five percent (153 of 342) showed benign, non-specific, self-limiting disease (Table 1).

Computed Tomography (CT) Scans
A CT scan of the chest or abdomen can help detect an enlarged lymph node or cancers in the liver, pancreas, lungs, bones and spleen. The noninvasive test is also used to monitor a tumor's response to therapy or detect a return of cancer after treatment.Cancer in the lymph nodes
Pain or swelling in the lymph nodes is a common symptom of cancer that starts in the lymphatic system, such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin lymphoma. Cancer that starts in another part of the body and spreads to the lymph nodes is called metastasis.Swollen lymph nodes are a sign that they're working hard. More immune cells may be going there, and more waste could be building up. Swelling usually signals an infection of some kind, but it could also be from a condition like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, or rarely, cancer.
What do normal lymph nodes feel like? Healthy lymph nodes are typically pea-sized. You should not normally be able to feel them. Lymph nodes that are just below the skin may be easier to feel when they become swollen as they will become larger.
Stage 3 cancer means the breast cancer has extended to beyond the immediate region of the tumor and may have invaded nearby lymph nodes and muscles, but has not spread to distant organs. Although this stage is considered to be advanced, there are a growing number of effective treatment options.
Low-Grade Lymphoma
These grow so slowly that patients can live for many years mostly without symptoms, although some may experience pain from an enlarged lymph gland. After five to 10 years, low-grade disorders begin to progress rapidly to become aggressive or high-grade and produce more severe symptoms.A lymph node ultrasound and biopsy is a way of checking the lymph nodes under the arm after breast cancer is diagnosed. Sometimes the cancer cells can spread into the nearby lymph nodes. Ultrasound scans use high frequency sound waves to create a picture of a part of the body. This turns the sound waves into a picture.
In most cases, only one area of nodes swells at a time. When more than one area of lymph nodes is swollen it's called generalized lymphadenopathy. Some infections (such as strep throat and chicken pox), certain medicines, immune system diseases, and cancers like lymphoma and leukemia can cause this kind of swelling.
Lymph nodes in the groin area can swell and rupture causing permanent scarring and severe pain.
Swollen lymph nodes will feel like soft, round bumps, and they may be the size of a pea or a grape. They might be tender to the touch, which indicates inflammation. In some cases, the lymph nodes will also look larger than usual. Lymph nodes appear in parallel on both sides of the body.
