Dumbarton (/d?mˈb?ːrt?n/; from Scottish Gaelic Dùn Breatann or Dùn Breatainn, meaning 'fort of the Britons' pronounced [t?umˈp?ʲ?ʰt???]) is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, on the north bank of the River Clyde where the River Leven flows into the Clyde estuary. Dumbarton was a Royal burgh between 1222 and 1975.
Dumbarton Rock, a volcanic plug, is said to resemble an elephant. The teams nickname 'The Sons' is derived from the phrase 'Sons of The Rock', a term used for those born in the town of Dumbarton.
History. Dumbarton Castle guards the point where the River Leven joins the River Clyde. Its recorded history goes back 1,500 years. Back then, the place was known as Alt Clut ('Rock of the Clyde').

Prepare to buy an Audi and/or BMW. Those areas have a strong reputation for being among the most posh/snobby in the region, that's the joke.
It's a nice quiet scenic town, quite posh - good schools, good housing - but not very much to do - you'd need to head into Dumbarton and clydebank for things like cinema, and more well known shops.

I grew up in Bridge of Weir & my parents still live there. It's a good place to live, schools are good, transport links are good there is a reasonable selection of shops, if it's important to you the GP practice gets a good reputation & it is still a proper community not just a dormitory.
