The PS3 has been hacked before, but Sony was able to inhibit the hack with an update to its own firmware. But the latest PS3 break is being dubbed unpatchable and the final hack. That's because this hack isn't giving you an exploit to use against a programming hole.

If you update an official Sony firmware then you will not able to play any copied game but if you update Custom Firmware then there should be no problem. You can play any copy game.

Without a disc drive you can only play games off of the hard drive. However, there is no reason to physically remove the drive, as you'll just be ripping the PS3 open to remove a component that is just as good in there as it is removed.

After you deactivate your account, and then delete it, you can factory reset the console from Settings >>System Settings >> Format Hard Disk. That will erase all your saves and system preferences off the the PS3 (networking, time zone, your all-important printer settings, etc.). After that, it should be good to go.
