Formed in 1624, the French Navy is one of the oldest navy forces in the world. Nicknamed “La Royale,” the French Navy participated in both World Wars and was instrumental in establishing the French colonial empire. The French Navy is composed of about 36,000 active personnel and has over 200 aircrafts.
The total displacement of the Royal Navy is approximately 439,200 tonnes (815,200 tonnes including the Royal Fleet Auxiliary). The Royal Navy is part of Her Majesty's Naval Service, which also includes the Royal Marines.
Though it has very little coastline, Germany has still managed to construct and maintain a fleet of nearly 100 naval vessels. Unlike some of the other maritime powers around the world, the German navy does not have an aircraft carrier. This is due to Germany's largely defensive military posture.
The scuttling of the French fleet at Toulon was orchestrated by Vichy France on 27 November 1942 to prevent Nazi German forces from taking it over. The Allied invasion of North Africa had provoked the Germans into invading the zone libre, neutral according to the Armistice of 1940.

The fleet in 2020 possesses 56 Los Angeles-, Seawolf- and Virginia-class attack submarines and Ohio-class cruise-missile submarines. Under previous planning, that number would drop to a low of 42 boats in 2028.

France possesses four Le Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). These submarines are 138 meters long with a 12.5-meter-wide beam and can travel over 25 knots when submerged. They can remain submerged for about 60 days without surfacing.
