Scientists just discovered a weird new shark that glows in the dark, so they officially named it the 'ninja lanternshark'
- The Goblin Shark: Not only is it the ugliest shark, it's also the pinkest.
- The Frilled Shark: It lives deep near the bottom of the ocean, avoiding the attention of the media.
We know that megalodon had become extinct by the end of the Pliocene (2.6 million years ago), when the planet entered a phase of global cooling. It may also have resulted in the megalodon's prey either going extinct or adapting to the cooler waters and moving to where the sharks could not follow.
Scrub Daddy is widely considered the most successful "Shark Tank" business. In 2012, Aaron Krause went on "Shark Tank" to pitch his durable, reusable, smiley-faced sponge that he called the Scrub Daddy. Lori Greiner invested $200,000 for a 20% stake after saying, "I know a hero from a zero. This is a hero."
This is a list of some of the weirdest sharks in the world and their most interesting adaptations.
- Megamouth Shark (Megachasma pelagios)
- Goblin Shark (Mitsukurina owstoni)
- Basking Shark (Cetorhinus maximus)
- Viper Dogfish (Trigonognathus kabeyai)
- Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus)
- Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus)
This massive great white shark is said to be around 50 years old. Many researchers say that she will continue to grow in size over time, though at a much slower pace than before. As with most female great whites and Great White Sharks in general, Deep Blue has an estimated life expectancy of around 70 years.
Livtyatan is thought to have been approximately the same size as a megalodon, weighing an estimated 100,000 pounds. While megalodon was an order of magnitude larger than other sharks in its era, it faced competition from animals like Livyatan. Tiger Sharks average around 10–14 feet and max out at just over 18 feet. Fully-grown White Sharks (their official name) often reach around 16 feet. Great Whites have a much heavier build than Tiger Sharks. A White Shark will generally weigh more than a Tiger Shark of the same size.
They are found in just about every kind of ocean habitat, including the deep sea, open ocean, coral reefs, and under the Arctic ice. Wherever they live, sharks play an important role in ocean ecosystems—especially the larger species that are more “scary†to people.
Deep Blue - An Ocean Celebrity
This massive great white shark is said to be around 50 years old. Many researchers say that she will continue to grow in size over time, though at a much slower pace than before.A more reliable way of estimating the size of megalodon shows the extinct shark may have been bigger than previously thought, measuring up to 65 feet, nearly the length of two school buses. Earlier studies had ball-parked the massive predator at about 50 to 60 feet long.
They have a sharply pointed conical snout, large pectoral and dorsal fins, and a strong crescent-shaped tail. Only the belly of white sharks is whitish. They have a contrasting pattern of dark blue, gray, or brown on their back and sides.
Despite the Great White shark in Jaws being 25 feet in length, adult great white sharks grow to a maximum size of approximately 20 feet in length.
We call baby sharks pups. Some sharks give birth to live pups and others lay eggs, much like a chicken!
Bull sharks bite with the greatest force among sharks, pound-for-pound, greater even than great whites or hammerheads, biologists report. "It's all about the width of the jaws, and bull sharks have very wide heads," says marine biologist Philip Motta of the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Are Scientist bringing back Megalodon? Scientists prove mighty 'megalodon' shark not killed off by space radiation. However, new findings due to be published to the journal PeerJ have found evidence that the megalodon shark died long before the cataclysmic event 2.6m years ago.
But could megalodon still exist? 'No.It's definitely not alive in the deep oceans, despite what the Discovery Channel has said in the past,' notes Emma. The sharks would leave telltale bite marks on other large marine animals, and their huge teeth would continue littering the ocean floors in their tens of thousands.
The T.rex had the strongest bite of any land animal in Earth's history. Its toothy jaw delivered upwards of 7 tons of pressure when it chomped its prey.
10 most powerful animal bites on the planet
- Saltwater crocs have the highest bite force ever recorded.
- A breaching great white attacks a seal.
- Hippos are capable of biting crocodiles in half.
- A jaguar feeding on its prey.
- Gorillas are mostly herbivores, but have a powerful bite force.
It turns out the largest great whites have a bite force of up to a whopping 2 tons (1.8 metric tons). The dinosaur had a maximum bite force of some 3.1 metric tons, "greater than for a living white shark, but puny compared to 'Big Tooth,'" Wroe said.
Estimates suggest their large jaws could exert a bite force of up to 108,500 to 182,200 newtons (24,400 to 41,000 lbf). Their teeth were thick and robust, built for grabbing prey and breaking bone. Megalodon probably had a major impact on the structure of marine communities.
The Blue Whale: Bigger Than Megalodon.
The great white is the most dangerous shark with a recorded 314 unprovoked attacks on humans. This is followed by the striped tiger shark with 111 attacks, bull sharks with 100 attacks and blacktip shark with 29 attacks. The second biggest shark in the world is the basking shark
Like whale sharks, basking sharks are filter-feeders. While they don't get quite as large as whale sharks, the largest one ever reliably measured was 12.27 metres or just over 40 feet long.
