Housing is considered affordable where the cost of rent is no more than 30 per cent of the household budget. To work this out roughly, just divide your weekly after-tax income by three and compare with what you're paying in rent each week.
While Section 8 assistance is only for families, the program's definition of “family” does not mean only married people or a household of relatives. A single person living alone or intending to live alone qualifies.
Once a family is determined eligible for HUD assistance and is selected to receive assistance, the rent they pay is generally based on 30% of their adjusted income. Those adjustments include deductions for elderly and disabled families, certain medical costs, and certain child care costs.

Tips. HUD housing units are federally owned for lower-income families, but the Section 8 lower-income housing program allows tenants to rent private residences approved by local housing authorities.
In most states, the Housing Choice Voucher Section 8 Program will not pay the security deposit on a home or apartment selected by the family. This can present challenges for the potential tenant as coming up with the funds to pay that expense, as well as the first or last month's rent, is often difficult.
When a tenant's child turns 18, they become an adult living in the rental property, and of course, they won't be listed on the lease agreement. The landlord won't have copies of identifying documents, nor will they have a background check done.
If you want to add someone to your household, you must get approval from SCCHA. If the new member is an adult, you must receive written permission from the owner or landlord prior to submitting your request to SCCHA. Submit your request in writing to your Housing Specialist, advising who you would like to add.
IHSS Compensation Not Considered When Calculating California Section 8 Tenant's Housing Assistance Payment. California public housing authorities may not consider in-home supportive services care compensation when calculating a public housing tenant's housing subsidy.
Generally, lump sum amounts received by a Section 8 recipient, such as inheritances, insurance settlements, or proceeds from the sale of property are considered assets, not income. The receipt of these types of assets alone should not interfere with public benefits.
SSI and Section 8For example, SSI recipients may qualify for HUD's Housing Choice Voucher Program, known as "Section 8." Section 8 is subsidized housing; recipients pay about 30 percent of their income towards rent, while Section 8 vouchers pay the remainder.
Any kind of inheritance will not affect your Section 8 housing choice voucher program. Because this housing program is part of the HUD Housing Program (Housing and Urban Development). And as inheriting money is not considered as an income, you will not be affected even if you are currently under Section 8.
Does funding for Section 8 Housing need to be included anywhere? Various forms of state aid are not taxable income. However, it may affect your ability to claim head of household status. If you are single and care for a qualifying dependent, head of household can save money compared to filing as single.
In general, income is money that “comes in.” An asset is money or property you already have. 106 C.M.R. § 704.110. Some assets and income do not count.
