Then again, London Bridge kept partially falling down for centuries after the Romans left Britain in the fifth century. It crumbled in 1281 (due to ice damage), 1309, 1425 and 1437, and then there was a devastating fire in the seventeenth century. Video Player is loading.
The centuries-old bridge is now open to buses, licensed cabs, motorbikes and pedestrians and cyclists between 7am and 7pm on weekdays. After 7pm all traffic can use the bridge until 7am the following morning during the week and any time at weekends.

In part the towers contain stairs and (more recently) elevators to access the upper-level walkways. The base of each tower contains counterweights and hydraulics used for opening the roadway, which is still done reasonably often to allow ships to pass.

There is a popular rumor that the bridge was bought in the mistaken belief that it was London's more recognizable Tower Bridge, but the allegation was vehemently denied by both McCulloch and Ivan Luckin, who arranged the bridge's sale.

The oldest datable bridge in the world still in use is the slab-stone single-arch bridge over the river Meles in Izmir (formerly Smyrna), Turkey, which dates from c. 850 BC. Remnants of Mycenaean bridges dated c. 1600 BC exist in the neighbourhood of Mycenae, Greece over the River Havos.
In the non-tidal Thames, Roach, Chub, Perch, Pike and Bream can all be found along the whole of the River. Roach, one of the most common species, are usually found around reed mace and where the water flows over a clean gravel bottom.
