A Personal Legend, as it's referred to in The Alchemist, is one's destiny in life. It's identifying your purpose in life and pursuing it. When Santiago meets the old King of Salem, Melchizedek, he teaches him what a Personal Legend is. He says that a Personal Legend is “what you have always wanted to accomplishâ€.
More irony: The gold that the alchemist created from lead is precisely what causes the thieves to believe that Santiago is digging for more treasure, and to beat him. For Santiago, and for the reader, this is an unexpected, negative consequence of the alchemist's wisdom and power.
Why does the shepherd decide against telling the baker what the old man had said about him? he wanted to leave the things the way they were. he finds Urim and Thummim on the ground, and a butterfly came in between the old man and him.
Why does the shepherd decide to see the Gypsy woman? He decides to see her because he had a recurring dream and wanted to know what it meant. The boys dream was about a child playing with his sheep and then the child transports him to the egyptian pyramids.
In The Alchemist, Santiago has been disappointed by the dream interpreter and met the supposed king of Salem Melchizedek. He asks Santiago for 10% of his sheep in exchange for helping him find the treasure.
Always ask an objective question. The king of Salem tells Santiago that he needs to follow omens to find the treasure in the pyramids in Egypt. The boy tells the king of Salem that he has enough sheep. The king says that for one-tenth of the sheep, he will tell him how to find the hidden treasure.
It takes courage to listen to your heart, particularly when the heart is fearful. Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist encourages us to live with the understanding that fear of suffering is worse than any suffering itself, and to pursue our heart's deepest dreams in search for our “treasureâ€.
What is strange about Santiago's dream? He had the same dream repeatedly of a young child bringing he to Egypt to show him treasure, but he wakes up before the dream ends.
The proverb is “Nana korobi, ya oki†which means “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.†It means choosing to never give up hope, and to always strive for more. It means that your focus isn't on the reality in front of you, but on a greater vision that may not be reality yet.
“But where are the drops of oil I entrusted to you?†asked the wise man. Looking down at the spoon he held, the boy saw that the oil was gone. “Well there is only one piece of advice I can give you,†said the wise man. From this simple story, we learn the key to happiness could be summed up as having balance.
That day, the crystal merchant sees Santiago looking around his shop. When Santiago finishes, the crystal merchant takes him to a café. He explains that Santiago didn't need to clean, because the Koran orders him to feed the hungry. Santiago replies that they both needed to cleanse their minds of bad thoughts.

The Four Obstacles to Pursuing Your Personal Legend
- We're told that everything is impossible. As children, we still believe that we can grow up to be anything we want.

- Fear of defeat.
- The fear of realizing the dream for which we fought all our lives.
Melchizedek tells Santiago that this is called the principle of favorability, otherwise known as beginner's luck. The king of Salem explains that a force wants us to realize our Personal Legends, and beginner's luck gives us a hint of what success might feel like.
When he's in Africa, Santiago doesn't spend too much money but is somewhat careless with it, and ultimately, it is stolen from him. The man who steals it from him pretends to be his friend who wants only to protect him from thieves. Unfortunately for Santiago, his new friend turns out to be one of those thieves.
The spoon with the drops of oil that must not be spilled represents the essential task, or Personal Legend, that a person must never lose sight of. However, he must also remember to live in the moment and appreciate the journey he is on.
Despite its meaningful content, “The Alchemist†is a very quick and easy read. Through Santiago's journey to treasure and love and travel, Coelho encourages readers to not only discover their own dreams for their lives, but also to never give up pursuing them. For in the quest, unexpected treasures lie.
A term which comes up repeatedly in the text, the Soul of the World is sometimes equated with God. It is a spiritual force that binds all of us together and governs all things and that speaks with us in the language of signs or omens.

The Alchemist tells the story of a young shepherd named Santiago who is able to find a treasure beyond his wildest dreams. Along the way, he learns to listen to his heart and, more importantly, realizes that his dreams, or his Personal Legend, are not just his but part of the Soul of the Universe.
Master Alchemists are the masters of all alchemists and are also known as Malch. Master Alchemists have a drinking skill of 15 and can drink all but some of the stronger potions they carry.
