Two-dimensional (2D) barcodes look like squares or rectangles that contain many small, individual dots. A single 2D barcode can hold a significant amount of information and may remain legible even when printed at a small size or etched onto a product.
UPC bar codes can range from 0.8 to 2.0 magnification. At 0.8, the bar code is reduced to 80 percent from the nominal size. At this magnification, the bar code is 1.175 inches wide by 0.816 inches high. This is the smallest that a bar code can be and still be scanned.

barcodes have a fixed relationship between barcode height and width, so if one dimension is modified, the other dimension must be altered by a proportional amount. For this reason, you should NOT resize or crop these barcodes.
There may be compliance rules suggesting minimum proportions for a given barcode standard. For regular linear product barcodes, the simple answer is yes, you can scale it (both case are safe). However, if you scale too far and the bars end up too close together, you will start to get a high level of read errors.

Quiet zones for two dimensional (2D) barcodes are calculated differently. The popular QR Code that is being used in marketing materials recommends a white space of 4 times the size of a module (that is the size of one of the black squares within the code) on all four sides of the code.
While black bars on a white background are a very good combination, your barcode does not have to be black and white. You must also make sure that you never reverse-out the image, putting white bars on a black background, because this will not work.
UPC sizes are referred to as magnifications or magnification factors. The nominal size of a UPC is 100% magnification factor or 1.469 inches wide (from the far left hand side number to the far right hand side number) by 1.02 inches tall (from the top of the bar code to the bottom of the human readable numbers).

Code 128 is a one-dimensional (1D), high-density barcode that is able to encode letters, numbers, special characters and control codes. Its primary use is in supply chain (inventory, shipping, etc). It can encode all 128 characters of ASCII.
What is an EAN-13 Barcode? The EAN-13 barcode encodes a GTIN-13 and is used to identify individual items at retail point of sale. It can also be used for trade units sold to consumers, e.g. a case of wine.
There are about 30 major barcode formats that are commonly used today based on the linear numeric, linear alpha-numeric, and 2-dimensional designs. Each of these major formats has seen adoption in particular applications that can take advantage of their unique qualities.
There are two ways to identify type of the barcode - using a capable scanner or visual inspection of its shape and start/stop patterns.
