Downbeat and upbeatThe downbeat is the first beat of the bar, i.e. number 1. The upbeat is the last beat in the previous bar which immediately precedes, and hence anticipates, the downbeat. Both terms correspond to the direction taken by the hand of a conductor.
4/4 Time Signature Example:A time signature of 4/4 means count 4 (top number) quarter notes (bottom number) to each bar. So the pulse, or beat, is counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. That means all the notes in each bar must add up to 4 quarter notes.
Like notes, each rest in music is allotted a certain amount of time. This time is measured in beats. A whole rest gets 4 beats, a half rest gets 2 beats, and a quarter rest gets 1 beat.
4/4 has four quarter note beats. We start off by writing an eighth rest to complete the first quarter note beat. We then write a quarter rest.
A piece with a time signature of 4/4 has four quarter note beats; each measure with a 3/4 meter has three quarter note beats; and each measure of 2/4 time has two quarter note beats. A time signature of 4/4 meter does not mean that each measure has only four quarter notes.
A time signature of 2-2 means there are 2 half beats in each measure. A time signature of 6-8 means there are
6 eighth notes in each measure.
What is a time signature?
| Bottom number | Note value |
|---|
| 8 | Eighth beats |
An eighth note (American) or a quaver (British) is a musical note played for one eighth the duration of a whole note (semibreve), hence the name. This amounts to twice the value of the sixteenth note (semiquaver). A related symbol is the eighth rest (or quaver rest), which denotes a silence for the same duration.
For example, in 6/8 an eighth note, which equals half of a beat, equals one beat in a 6/8 time signature or any other time signature with the denominator of 8. A quarter note equals 1 beat in a 4/4 or 2/4 or any other time signature with a denominator of 4.
A slur is a curved line that connects two or more notes of different pitches. A slur means the notes should be played as smoothly as possible, with no space in between. 1. On each line, write the number of counts each pair of tied notes would receive.
MUSICAL NOTE VALUES

| quarter rest | one beat of silence |
| eighth rest | one half of a beat of silence |
| sixteenth rest | one quarter of a beat of silence |

In music, a half note (American) or minim (British) is a note played for half the duration of a whole note (or semibreve) and twice the duration of a quarter note (or crotchet). The half rest (or minim rest) denotes a silence of the same duration.
The duration of a half note is 2 beats. Notice that the half note is twice as long as the quarter note. Since a half note gets 2 beats, and remember that a quarter note gets 1 beat, that means that you will count and play a half note twice as long as quarter note.
So for a 4/4 time signature the top number means that there are 4 beats per bar, and the bottom number indicates that we are using crotchets for each beat. Another common quaver time is the 6/8 time signature, which means we are playing 6 quavers per bar (also 9/8 and 12/8 are very common).
Whole note rest: Also known as a whole rest or a semibreve rest, this symbol represents a musical pause that is the length of a whole note. In a 4/4 time signature, a whole rest tells the player to pause for the whole bar. On a five-line musical staff, a whole rest hovers just below the fourth line. 2.
As you may remember from school or music lessons, notes come in different flavors, each with its own note value. The value of a half note is half that of a whole note, the value of a quarter note is a quarter that of a whole note, and so on. Each level of the “tree of notes†is equal to the others.
A single eighth note looks like a quarter note with a flag. The single eighth note lasts for half of a beat.
Tika Sumpter net worth and salary: Tika Sumpter is an American actress, singer, and model who has a net worth of $6 million dollars. Tika Sumpter was born in Queens, New York and graduated from Marymount Manhattan College with a degree in Communications.
Eighth Note Flags are always written on the right of the stem. 2. Eighth Note Flags do not touch the notehead. UMT Tip For Eighth Note Flags: Yes, in printed music, it often looks like the flag on a descending stem is touching the notehead.
The eighth note is worth ½ of a Quarter note. It may also be considered as a one beat note in 3/8 and similar timings, the 8 on the bottom of the time signature giving the clue that you are counting in eighth notes. This is the first note in the rhythm tree to have a flag.
| Musical Notes Chart |

| Name (UK) | Name (US) | Beats |

| quaver | eighth note | 1/2 beat |
| semiquaver | 16th note | 1/4 beat |
| demisemiquaver | 32nd note | 1/8 beat |

The quarter note has a filled note head. Flags and beams shorten the length of a note, and beams connect flagged notes for ease of reading. Eighth notes and eighth rests are 1/8 the length of a whole note and are often half a beat each. Single eighth notes can be connected into pairs by a beam.
Quarter Note
- When writing a quarter note (or any note with a stem), if it is below the middle line, the stem points up:
- If the stem points up, it is drawn on the right side of the note head.
- A quarter note can also be broken down into four sixteenth notes:
- … or any subdivision thereof.
Four sixteenth notes occupy the same amount of time as one quarter note. Four semiquavers occupy the same amount of time as one crotchet.
The quarter note is the third note; it looks like a filled-in half note, with the same stem attached. You hold it for one full count, which is a quarter of a whole note.
Half Note. Half notes are probably the second most common type of rhythm after quarter notes. Half notes last for 2 counts, or twice as long as a quarter note. You can think of half notes as half of one measure, or the same thing as two quarter notes.
The time signature 3/4 tells a musician that a quarter note represents one beat in a measure (the lower number) and that there will be three beats in each measure (the top number).
A quarter rest is equal in time value to a quarter note. It's a period of silence that lasts for one beat in 4/4 time. It has one-fourth the value of a whole rest. In other words, four 1/4 rests equals one whole rest while two 1/4 rests equals one half rest.
