This is usually 3mm thick, or 1/8” thick. Standard underlayment. This is the most commonly used underlayment. It is also 3mm thick (1/8” thick) and is best installed over wood subflooring.
So basically if you are laying laminate over a wooden floor that is level and you are not concerned about sound insulation then foam underlay would be used, this is normally very cheap and comes in large rolls. Foil backed underlay is good at reflecting heat and can help to keep your house warmer.
Get started by rolling out the underlayment with the silver side facing down. The tape strip should be flush up against the wall. Leave the overlapping section on the side that goes out toward the room. You'll need this section later as you continue to unroll your underlayment.
Take the underlay and lay it loosely rubber side down. Ensuring you keep the underlay straight and gap-free, staple it along its edges inside the gripper. Use adhesive if you are laying carpet onto a concrete floor. Use tape to stick along the full length of joins.
Underlay also works as acoustic insulation, which is valuable with a wood floor as it can otherwise become quite loud.
- Laminate 3mm dpm with built in damp proof membrane and is a great option for wooden floor boards and laminate flooring.
- Super Gold is the thickest underlay you can put under laminate or wood flooring.
Installation of underlay
Underlay is placed next to each other on base surface, leaving 5–10 mm expansion gaps between the boards and the walls. In order to get an adequate expansion gap, you can place pieces of underlay between the walls and the boards and remove them later when all the underlay is installed. You should make sure that the underlay extends up the wall by at least 5 cm. On wooden and other types of floor lay the underlay with the rubber side down, and again tape the seams with an appropriate underlay tape. When fitting the underlay leave a 5-10mm gap around pipes.

Underlay for Solid Wood Flooring
As solid wood flooring is usually glued down, an option is to glue it directly to the subfloor, without underlay. However, an easier alternative is a pre-glued wooden flooring underlay which has an adhesive coating. Here are the top differences between the two: PU foam is becoming increasingly popular and is a more modern material for underlay. PU foam is lightweight and easy to fit in most rooms. Sponge rubber is denser and heavier, which makes it slightly more difficult to fit and handle in certain places, such as the stairs.
The answer is no. We recommend to use duct tape as every hardware store carries this product. Some manufacturers sell specialized tape for underlayment but there is no extra benefit.
Old carpet can be used in lieu of new underlay when budget insists. Its not a perfect option, but its a lot better than no underlay, and I've not run into troubles using it. Used carpet doesn't yield as much as underlay when stepped on, but its far better than no underlay at all.
Can I lay a new carpet on my existing underlay? In our opinion it is false economy to fit new carpet over old underlay. Carpets need to have as firm a support as possible in order to achieve its maximum performance.
There is a variety of underlay to choose from, with the most popular being polyurethane (PU) foam, rubber and felt.
- PU Foam. PU foam is very popular choice as it gives a lovely soft feeling underfoot.
- Rubber. Rubber is great at sound proofing as well as protecting the carpet.
- Felt.
If so, the answer is: no, you don't need a carpet underlay. The reason for this? A carpet underlay can prevent warmth ventilating from the underfloor heating through the carpet. Be sure to ask for professional advice from a carpet specialist.
Do I Need to Buy New Carpet Underlay. The simple answer is YES - this is not just a sales gimmick and has genuine reasons and you will literally feel the benefit under your feet. Some carpets do not require an underlay, such as a waterproof gel backed carpet or a carpet with a felt back.
Grippers need to be fitted before underlay is placed on the floor. You can usually nail the grippers to the floor, or simply glue them if the floor is concrete. Once they are affixed and secure, you next to need to lay out the underlay to fit the floor.
Foam board insulation is easy to use and is a great DIY way to add some insulation. It comes in standard-size 4×8 sheets, and smaller sizes, in many different thicknesses from 1/4 inch to 2 inches.
Rigid foam insulation, whether it is expanded or extruded polystyrene, does have to be covered if it is installed in the interior of a building. This wall covering must have a minimum fire rating to protect the insulation from quick combustion during a fire.
Aside from its inherent insulating performance, extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam sheathing, when properly installed and seams taped, can also greatly reduce air leakage through walls, which can improve energy efficiency and comfort.
Choose the right type of rigid foam for your needs
- Polyisocyanurate: Known as polyiso for short, polyisocyanurate foam has the highest R-value per inch (R-6.5 to R-6.8) of any rigid insulation.
- Extruded polystyrene: Extruded polystyrene (XPS) rigid foam is usually blue or pink in color, with a smooth plastic surface.
If you're wondering whether to put the foil side of foam insulation board shiny side in or out, consider whether you want to make the space inside warmer or cooler. If you want to make the space warmer, the foil should face inside so it can reflect radiant heat back into the room.
Drywall, which is actually a mineral called gypsum, resists fire. It also helps insulate and soundproof the room. The most common way to hang drywall over rigid foam insulation is to glue and screw it into place.
More information is available from the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) about vapor barriers and vapor retarders. XPS is manufactured in both an unfaced form or with different plastic facings. However, XPS is considered a vapor retarder, not a vapor barrier.
Cut a piece of thick string or yarn to stretch across the back of the project. Don't pull the string too tight; it needs to give a little. Hot glue the string to the back of the foam board. Stick a thumbtack, nail or picture hook into the wall and slip the string over it to hang.
