Around 4000-6000 years ago the Ancient Egyptians discovered they could domesticate this cat. Not for personal pleasure – they didn't need to stroke a pet – but to tackle rampant rat and mice populations. Domesticated wild cats lived in Egyptian granaries where food was stored. They ate rats and bred with each other.

Unfortunately, cub petting is not illegal in the U.S. IFAW is working with a coalition of organizations to encourage the USDA to close the loophole that allows the public to handle big cats between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks (currently the only age at which it's legal for them to be handled).
The Big Cat Public Safety Act prohibits the private ownership of big cats and makes it illegal for exhibitors to allow direct contact with cubs. There are few federal laws protecting the millions of wild animals living in captivity in the United States, some of whom are kept in private homes.
Owning a pet tiger is considered legal or is unregulated in eight states, all of which have rather lax regulatory laws concerning animal rights in general: North Carolina, Alabama, Delaware, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Tigers are surprisingly cheap to purchase as a pet.
