Walter Sobchak (born June 20, 1945) is a Vietnam War veteran, and The Dude's best friend and bowling teammate. Born a Polish Catholic, he converted to Judaism when he married his wife, Cynthia. His experiences from the Vietnam War have left him mentally unstable and paranoid.
The Dude obviously has a strong hatred for The Eagles since he would rather get in a physical altercation with a cab driver than to listen to one of their songs.
The Stranger, played by typecast cowboy Sam Elliott, is the narrator of The Big Lebowski, setting up the story before The Dude is even shown on screen. Another theory is that The Stranger is God, coming to The Dude in a time of need to pass on wisdom.
