Be between the ages of 17 and 26. Have a high school GPA of at least 2.50 (based on a 4.0 GPA system) Graduate from high school or have a diploma equivalent at the time of college entrance.
In order to participate in MCJROTC, you must be enrolled in and attending a regular course of instruction in a high school where a MCJROTC unit is located. You may not attend one high school and participate in the MCJROTC program of another high school.
Students who participate in JROTC are not required to join the military after high school, and the program is not a military preparation class. But as the Air Force JROTC website notes, the program is regulated by the military and participation may improve rank upon enlisting.
The following steps are required for a school who desires to establish a JROTC or NDCC program:
- Determine the program (JROTC or NDCC) which best meets your schools requirements.
- Complete the corresponding application(s).
- Mail completed application(s) to the appropriate brigade address in your state (below).

The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC -- commonly pronounced "JAY-rawtsee") is a federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools and also in some middle schools across the United States and at US military bases across the world.
Unlike the active armed forces, you don't have to sign a contract that says you have to stay in JROTC for a certain amount of time, you can quit whenever you want.
The JROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship, character development, leadership development and community service. Education classes introduce cadets to the elements of leadership, drill instruction and ceremonies, military customs, uniform inspections, physical fitness training, marksmanship and military history.
JROTC curriculum includes lessons in leadership, health and wellness, physical fitness, first-aid, geography, American history and government, communications, and emotional intelligence. The curriculum is rigorous and relevant to 21st century education.
The FY2020 NDAA (P.L. 116-92) allows for 8th grade students to participate in JROTC if physically co- located with 9-12th grade students.
