As per ISO (International Standard Organization) A series cut sheet sizes, A4 is 297 mm long and 210 mm wide sheet written as 210x297 mm. Nearest Traditional British size is Quarto which is 8.0" wide and 10" long written as 8x10.
To many people wordwide, excluding North America and Canada, the most familiar paper size size is A4 (a familiar 210mm x 297mm). It is commonly used for letters and correspondence in the UK and it is the standard paper size for most home printers.
A4 Paper is a standardized copy paper size established by the International Standards Organization. The paper dimensions are 210 x 297 mm. Throughout Europe and the world A4 is the close equivalent to U.S. letter size (8.5" x 11"), but measuring 8.27 x 11.69 inches.
A0 has an area of one square metre (but it isn't a square), and every other paper size in the A series is based on A0. We use A4 for writing on because it is a lot more convenient than trying to write on a square metre sheet of paper!
For example, the dimensions of A4 paper are 210x297mm, and half of A4 equals A5, and double A4 equals A3. Starting from A0, all subsequent A paper sizes are determined by halving the paper on its longest size.
An A3 sheet measures 420mm x 297mm. so to move up a size 210 x 2 = 420. This gives an A3 sheet the flat size equivalent of exactly 2 A4 sheets.
