Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
There are four major sororities, all of which were established in early twentieth century, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (Howard University, 1908), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Howard University, 1913), Zeta Phi Beta Sorority (Howard University, 1920), and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority (Butler University, 1922).
Pledging a SororityDuring the new member education process, pledges learn more about the organization. For example, a new member might learn the history of the sorority and its values. She'll meet the other new members and spend time bonding with current members.
21. Inactive Member - An NPHC member who has elected or due to grades has to become inactive in sorority or fraternity life. They have no say or participation in chapter activities.
Prophyte: Someone who has been a member of an NPHC group for a year or more, or someone who has initiated new members.
Typically, rush is called “formal rush” because it's a highly organized process lasting several weeks. Women are typically required to visit each sorority and meet current members.
Line Brothers/Sisters: Persons that were a part of the same initiation (membership) process, at the same time and in the same chapter. Each person usually obtains a number during initiation, which is referred to as a Line Number.
Part of a Rho Gamma's job is to disaffiliate from her chapter. This means that they take a step back from their chapters and give up their letters so that other girls can find theirs.
Sweethearts are women chosen by the brothers, women who have "been around (the fraternity), who have hung out a lot," said John Gilbert, a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. They serve as party guests, public relations advocates, friends to the brothers and various other capacities.
How many AST chapters are there?
As Alpha Sigma Tau celebrates Advisor Appreciation Month 2016, the dedication and efforts of the Sorority's first three advisors – Effie P. Lyman, Ada A. Norton, and Abigail Pearce – are remembered with genuine admiration and heartfelt gratitude.
