Luckily, most states allow unlimited attempts to pass the bar exam. There are 21 states that limit bar exam attempts, that range from 2-6 attempts.
The California Bar Examination is given twice each year in February and July. The exam will be given over two days and consist of the following parts: Five one-hour essay questions.

Bar Exam Packing List
- Alarm clock (especially if your phone alarm doesn't always wake you up).
- Eye cover (in case it is too bright to sleep at night).
- Ear plugs to bring into the exam room and to wear at night if necessary.
- Plenty of pens, pencils, highlighters.
Applicants should bring any permitted personal items, e.g., prescription medication, foam ear plugs, pens, etc., into the examination area in a small, clear plastic bag. Larger items, such as pillows, do not need to fit into the clear plastic bag that holds their smaller items.
The examination is electronically timed and the official time is kept by the announcer. Applicants are encouraged to keep track of their own time; wall clocks are not provided.
Do you sit down with a laptop or a paper and pencil? It can make a big difference in how you study and how you approach the exam. Currently, the MBE is not offered electronically. Instead, you will get a booklet and a scantron.
