18650 3.7 Volt lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are cylindrical batteries used in mainly for laptop battery packs, telephones, electronic cigarettes, flashlights and cordless power tools.
Charge a Li-ion Battery Using USB Port
- Get a USB cable similar to a smartphone charger.
- Connect the USB end to your laptop, PC, printer, camera, power bank or any other electronic device that allows the USB port.
- Now, take your gadget and connect the charging end of the cable to your device that you want to charge.

The labels “18650” and “AA” technically just refer to different battery sizes. The key distinction is that the 18650 is specifically a size for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery while AA can be zinc-carbon, alkaline, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), or even lithium-ion among others.
What does battery “mAh” capacity mean? The mAh capacity rating refers to the storage capacity available for a particular battery. A battery with a capacity rating of 1800 mAh could deliver a current of 1800mA for one hour. Higher mAh ratings for the same battery type will generally mean longer run times.
The biggest users of 18650 cells are laptops and cordless tools. Laptops use low-amp cells that have a medium capacity, and they are sold based on the lowest price. The 18650 cells that are the most useful to ebikes are from cordless tools, which have the dual needs of high amps and long range.
They will all be roughly 18mm in diameter, 65mm in length and will all have a positive and negative end, an insulator disc and an outer wrap. This is where in appearance at least, the similarities between all 18650 batteries end.
Best 18650 Batteries 2020. The best 18650s on the market for vaping. A great 25A battery made by Sony, a trusted name in battery manufacturing. With a high-ceiling for amps and long-running times, the Sony VTC5A is the top pick.

lithium cells only have an average of 1500mAh compared to the 2200 mAH average of
NiMH cells.

| Specific Power (W/kg) | <200 | 100 – 1000 |
For vaping, the most common type of battery is the 18650, but regardless of size, they all have the same basic design and perform the same function. The most important things to be able to recognise on a vape battery are the positive and negative terminals.
Generally, a 3.7V lithium battery needs an overcharge and overdischarge protection circuit board. Lithium battery with protection circuit board can be charged with 5V voltage(4.8V to 5.2V can be used). For 3.7V lithium batteries, the charge cut-off voltage is 4.2V and the discharge cut-off voltage is 3.0V.
The charging cut-off voltage of 3.7V battery is 4.2V and the discharge cut-off voltage is 3.0V. Therefore, when the open-circuit voltage of the battery is lower than 3.6V, it should be able to charge. It is better to use the 4.2V constant voltage charging mode, so you don't need to pay attention to the charging time.
There is NO difference between 3.6 and 3.7 volt cells. It is simply a NOMINAL voltage, because every cell needs a reference point. In fact, either 3.6 or 3.7 volt cells have a fairly wide range. Fully charged, they are at 4.2 volts, and they can usually be discharged down to 2.75 or even 2.5 volts.
By using the cells in series, a battery pack can have any voltage possible in 3.7 volt steps. Ex. Lithium-Ion batteries use 3 cells to provide an 11.1 volt battery, 4 cells to provide a 14.8 volts battery or 10 cells to provide 37 volts battery.
Ah, Ampere Hour or Amp Hour all describe the same characteristic of a battery – how long it will last when connected to the item it is powering. This is often referred to as the 'capacity' of a battery. The measurement is often misunderstood as, for example, “a 5Ah battery will power a 5 amp device for one hour”.
Lithium-ion
| Nominal cell voltage | Typical end-of-discharge | Max charge voltage |
|---|
| 3.6V | 2.8–3.0V | 4.2V |
| 3.7V | 2.8–3.0V | 4.2V |
| 3.8V | 2.8–3.0V | 4.35V |
| 3.85V | 2.8–3.0V | 4.4V |
Below: A simple example, but heavy user of power is a 12 volt hair dryer rated at 10 amps. A 100 ah battery should give you (100/10=10) 10 hours of usage. If you use it for 5 mins a day, it could last 120 days.
How long does a 4ah battery last? To a 4.0 Ah battery will provide 4 Amp-Hours of power. That means 4 Amps for 1 hour, or 1 Amp for 4 hours… whatever it is, you can determine the expected runtime by dividing the potential stored (4 Ah) by the power demanded (in Amps) to get the number of hours it should run.
Without an analyzer, or running runtime test etc, the easiest way to tell that a Li-Ion cell is nearing it's EOL, is that it will not hold a charge well, will not perform as well as it used to, and will get noticeably warmer when charging.
