Q: What makes ivory so precious? It has no intrinsic value, but its cultural uses make ivory highly prized. In Africa, it has been a status symbol for millennia because it comes from elephants, a highly respected animal, and because it is fairly easy to carve into works of art.
Ivory Ella sells clothing and accessories, donating a portion of the proceeds to the nonprofit organization. Named after Ella, an elephant in Amboseli National Park, the company donates to end ivory trade and preserve elephant ivory.
Through their “good clothes for a good cause†Ivory Ella is devoted to encouraging people to live a life with empathy, creativity, strength, and loyalty – all ideals of an elephant. Ivory Ella donates 10% of their net profits to Save the Elephants and other charitable organizations.
That's a lot of money in most African countries. But the big profit is made in Asia. Thai Customs recently evaluated smuggled ivory as being worth $1,800 per kilogram—$18,000 per elephant—wholesale. The “street value†retail price of 10 kilograms of carved ivory now runs about $60,000.

Ivory Ella shirts are preshrunk and will not shrink if they are washed correctly. After the initial washes, Ivory Ella recommends washing the shirts in cold water with a mild detergent.
Ivory Ella launched online on April 18, 2015 in Fiano's basement. The business started with a single T-shirt bearing an original elephant design. More than 500 of the shirts sold in just 15 minutes. Within a week, the newly formed company had sold more than 7,000 items.
The fast-fashion model has made it increasingly challenging to create sustainable products that can compete. Ivory Ella is constantly seeking new ways to improve its sustainability efforts.
