Vmware vCenter Inventory service is one of the prerequisites for vCenter server installation. It stores vCenter server inventory data and server application data.It also allows you to search the inventory objects across linked vCenter server instances.
In the
vSphere Web-client (Flash), you can select a
list of VMs and click the export button at the bottom of the
list.

A typical VMware vSphere data center consists of basic physical building blocks such as x86 virtualization servers, storage networks and arrays, IP networks, a management server, and desktop clients. Each computing server is called a standalone host in the virtual environment.
A cluster in vSphere is a collection of ESXi hosts configured to share their resources. Clusters are used to enable some of the more powerful features in vSphere, such as High Availability (HA), Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), Fault Tolerance (FT), and vMotion.
The first step to enabling Storage DRS is creating a datastore cluster:
- From the vCenter Home view, select Datastores and Datastore Clusters.
- Select your Datacenter object and right click it and select New Datastore Cluster.
- Give the Datastore Cluster a name and click Next.
Run Reports using the vSphere Client VCM Plug-In
- In the left pane, select a machine against which to run the action. You can run a report against only one machine at a time, either host or guest.
- Click the VCM Actions tab.
- In the Actions area, click Run Reports. The Machines for Action area displays the Available machines.
- Move one machine to the Selected list.
To test alerts: Configure the mail host, send mail address, and authentication configuration via VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat Console Advanced > System > Configuration. Click on Apply. Click Alerts > Configuration and check that Testing Alert Reporting is selected.
Configuring Email Alert in vCenter Server
- Login to vCenter Server using vSphere Web Client. Choose the vCenter Server.
- Choose the Mail Option to configure Mail settings. Here as you can see you only have to provide the Mail Server IP & Mail Sender Address.
- You have successfully configured the Email.
- Now as you have successfully configured the Email Settings.
Remove from Inventory – this option unregisters the VM from the host and the vCenter Server inventory, but the VM's files remain on the datastore. Delete from Disk – this option removes the VM from the inventory and delete its files from the datastore.
Procedure
- In the vSphere Client home page, navigate to Home > Hosts and Clusters.
- Select a host in the inventory.
- (Optional) If the host is part of a cluster, put it in maintenance mode.
- Right-click the host you want to remove in the inventory pane, and select Remove from Inventory from the pop-up menu.
Deleting a virtual machine from VMware Workstation (2075483)
- Click the name of the virtual machine.
- In the Workstation menu bar, click Manage in.
- Select Delete from disk.
- Click Yes.
- To free up the space in VMware Workstation, empty the Recycle Bin.
Verify you have found the correct VMX file in the datastore, and note which folder it's in. Go back to where the virtual machine is listed in vSphere, right-click it, and select “All Virtual Infrastructure Actions.” Then choose “Remove from Inventory.”
To move an ESXi/ESX host from one vCenter Server to another, remove the host from the vCenter Server then add the host to a new vCenter Server. This operation does not affect the state of any virtual machines running on the ESXi/ESX as long as the prerequisites are met.
Here are the main steps:
- Get current configuration settings: VMX file path. Folder / Location. Resource Pool or VM Host.
- Stop the VM.
- Remove/Unregister the VM from the inventory.
- Register/Add the VM to the inventory.
- Start the VM.
To connect an ESXi host to vCenter Server:
- Login to the vSphere Client.
- Right click on the ESXi host in the Inventory.
- Click Connect. Note: A reconnect host task appears in the recent tasks pane.
- Wait until the task status changes to complete.
To register a virtual machine in ESXi host using VMware Host Client:
- Open the Host Client and log in with appropriate credentials.
- Click Storage.
- Right-click on the appropriate datastore and click Register a VM.
- Navigate to the folder named after the virtual machine.
- Select the virtual machine.
When in the DataStore Browser. Click on the Search Tab. Then search for the folder you would like to delete. Select the Folder, Then click the Delete button.
VMware or Hyper-V? Part 3: Virtualization Licensing Costs
| vSphere Edition | Cost | # Physical Processors |
|---|
| Essentials Plus | $4,625 | 3 servers / 2 processors each |
| Standard (requires vCenter) | $995 | 1 |
| Enterprise Plus (requires vCenter) | $3,595 | 1 |
| Platinum (Enterprise Plus & AppDefense -requires vCenter) | $4,595 | 1 |
Type 1 Hypervisor. A bare-metal hypervisor (Type 1) is a layer of software we install directly on top of a physical server and its underlying hardware. There is no software or any operating system in between, hence the name bare-metal hypervisor. Type 1 hypervisors are mainly found in enterprise environments.
Hyper-V Server is a standalone product which only includes roles related to virtualization. It is free and includes the same hypervisor technology in the Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2019.
To calculate the number of licenses required, consider each per- processor license includes licensing for up to 32 physical cores in each CPU. Centralized licensing with no single point of failure vCenter Server is the recommended interface for license assignment to vSphere hosts.
VMware vSphere Essentials Kits are for small businesses and combine virtualization for up to three physical servers with centralized management using VMware vCenter Server® for Essentials™. Customers can purchase one-year term licenses for vSphere Essentials Kits and vSphere Essentials Plus Kits from the VMware store.
With this change, VMware is still using the per-CPU licensing model, but we will require one license for any software offering that we license on a per-CPU basis, for up to 32 physical cores. That is, the license will cover CPUs with up to 32 physical cores.
vSphere Client installation
- Go to the location of the installation software and double-click autorun.exe:
- In the VMware vCenter Installer window, click VMware vSphere Client:
- Click Install to start the installation wizard.
- Select the language for the installation and click OK:

vCenter Server systems are licensed with vCenter Server licenses that have per-instance capacity. To license a vCenter Server system, you need a vCenter Server license that has the capacity for at least one instance.
