After being held in Toronto from 1927-1939, the Brier went 'national' in 1940, staged in Winnipeg. It has been held in every province at least once and in 31 cities from coast-to-coast. Manitoba has won a leading 27 Briers, the last by skip Jeff Stoughton in 2011 in London; Alberta is next with 26 victories.

"Brier" originally referred to a brand of tobacco sold by the event's first sponsor, the Macdonald Tobacco Company. "Russ" Howard, CM, ONL (born February 19, 1956 in Midland, Ontario) is a Canadian curler and Olympic champion, based in Regina, Saskatchewan, but originally from Midland, Ontario. He lived in Moncton, New Brunswick from 2000 to 2019.
He has won four world championships, four Briers and 17 Ontario provincial championships, including a record eight straight, from 2006 to 2013. Through 2017, he has played in 218 games at the Brier, more than any other curler in history.

Koe continues to share the record of four Brier wins as a skip with Ernie Richardson, Randy Ferbey and Kevin Martin. He was also trying to become the first hometown winner since Brad Gushue won in St. John's, N.L., in 2017. Gushue defended his crown the following year and also won last season.
The origin of curling traces back to 16th century Scotland, where the sport was played on frozen ponds and lochs. The first recorded match took place around 1541: a Scottish notary recorded a challenge between a monk at Paisley Abbey and a relative of the abbott.
