No tears are shed for the murdered hero Han Solo in The Last Jedi. Solo was tragically killed by his son Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in 2015's The Force Awakens, a stunning patricide which caused a major disturbance in the Force. But there's a rebellion to fight in The Last Jedi.
Ren tells Han he feels conflicted, and asks his father for help, which Han promises to give; Ren then ignites his lightsaber, impaling and killing Han. An enraged Chewbacca fires at Ren, wounding him.
Another reason that Han Solo needed to die in The Force Awakens is so that he had a true purpose for his death. Having Kylo Ren kill his own father created so much emotional turmoil inside of him that he's not even sure if he believes in what he's doing anymore, and he doesn't know whether to be Ben Solo or Kylo Ren.
But Chewie is not dead, and that is a solid tick in the “Win” column. The gang eventually rescues Chewie from the First Order (though not without some difficulty) and the Wookiee lives to play (and win) another game of Dejarik. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now playing in theaters.
