Connect to Wi-Fi
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings, and then tap Wireless.
- Verify that Airplane Mode is Off.
- Next to Wi-Fi, tap On.
- Tap a network to connect to it. If you see a lock. icon, a network password is required. Enter the Wi-Fi network password, and then tap Connect.
To conduct a hard restart, simply press and hold the power button for six to eight seconds. After around 10 seconds have gone by, your Kindle's display should go blank. Don't panic: This is part of the Kindle's restart process. Continue to hold the power button for one minute, then release it.
Wi-Fi® Protected Setup (WPS) is a built-in feature of many routers that make it easier to connect Wi-Fi enabled devices to a secure wireless network.
On your Kindle home screen, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings. Tap the Menu icon again, and then tap Update Your Kindle. Tap OK to perform the update. Message Your Kindle Is Updating appears.
Usually it's just glitch or a bad wireless connection, and the book will often download with a second attempt. If the book or app gets stuck downloading partway, select to delete it from your Kindle app or device and then try re-downloading it from the cloud section.
If the menu restart doesn't resolve the problem, try a hard restart:
- Press and hold down the power button for 45 seconds (7-15 seconds for a second-generation Kindle Paperwhite). The screen goes blank.
- Press the power button again — just a simple press as if you were taking your Kindle Paperwhite out of sleep mode.

The battery symbol with the exclamation mark means your battery is no longer communicating with the device. Contact Amazon and depending on the age of the device they may replace it for you or if it is out of warranty you can try changing the battery out yourself.
Whether it's the home or office Wi-Fi, or the phone's mobile hotspot, you can still get online with the old Kindles. The problem is some of the old devices do not have Wi-Fi support. But the Kindle (1st and 2nd Generation) and Kindle DX (2nd Generation) only support 3G connectivity. There's no Wi-Fi support for those.
Check that your device has the latest software version: From the home screen, select All Settings > Settings > Device Info. Or click on the option Update Your Kindle, if available. Make sure that your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Restart your Kindle.
If you are trying to sync Kindle or Audiobook content, verify that Whispersync is enabled. From Manage Your Content and Devices, go to Settings, and then ensure that Device Synchronization (Whispersync Settings) is turned ON. Sync your device.
Tap Menu→Settings→Wi-Fi Networks, and then tap the network that has a check mark to its left. When the Forget Network? dialog box appears, tap Forget. You'll have to reselect the network and enter the password (if one is required).
Tap the Settings icon from the Home screen, and then tap All Settings. Tap Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Tap Delete Saved Wi-Fi Passwords, and then tap Delete to confirm.
