imo if you're buying it essentially for virtual console games then yes it's worth it. Especially since it seems like the Switch won't be getting a proper VC or anything more than NES games, at least in the near future.
Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities since Nintendo feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.
The wii u and 3ds use the eshop, which is different from the wii channel, and are still available for use. Wii U and 3DS eShops should both still be up for at least a solid 4 or 5 more years, maybe longer. It's the same server for Switch and Wii U so the answer is yes !
For the time being, you can still download the classic titles purchased in the virtual console. While the Wii virtual console features nearly 400 titles, the Wii U has 140 fewer. So, there are a lot of games for older systems that you can't purchase at all right now. The Wii U won't last forever, either.
The 3DS isn't officially dead: Nintendo has said that it plans to continue supporting the platform. But the launch of a dedicated handheld Switch suggests the company's portable game efforts could be focused on the Switch, not the 3DS, moving forward.
The Wii U has been a dormant part of the Nintendo hardware lineup, in favor of the newer and much more successful Nintendo Switch. But it isn't entirely dead and gone yet, as the company still issues occasional firmware updates. Like one this week, in the year 2019.

For supported games, a television isn't required to be connected to the Wii U; the Wii U can operate in Off-TV Play mode as long as the console is connected to a power source.
Yes and no. You can boot up and play games without touching the Gamepad. But the system requires a gamepad connection.
Cemu—the Nintendo Wii U emulator—is now a mature program with good performance on most systems. If you'd like to play Wii U games on your PC with all the benefits of an emulator, Cemu is the way to go.
Besides the length, which is a noticeable change in the Nintendo's next-generation game console, the Wii U is much more powerful than its predecessor, plus it's backward-compatible with Wii games, which is not possible with the Wii.
