How Long do Cars Last? According to Consumer Reports, the average lifespan of today's cars is about eight years or 150,000 miles. That's shorter, however than many well-built cars that are properly maintained.
The result is that many American vehicles are now just as reliable as their foreign counterparts -- and in many cases, they're even more reliable. On an overall manufacturer level, J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study also illustrates the major reliability improvements made by American automakers.
They say that the Japanese are more conservative when it comes to adopting new technologies. It reflects in the consumer reports that the reliability of many European and American cars is due to more cutting-edge and advanced technologies like modern electronics.

Bigger engines can have more torque than smaller engines. Better still, they tend to have it much lower down than smaller, turbocharged engines. Meaning you don't have to change down as many gears just to pass someone on the highway.

Japanese cars, on the other hand, remain mostly within the same range, so they're actually more stable within a longer period of time.

Better overall reliability – Japanese cars, in particular, have earned a reputation for reliability, which means you need repairs less often and could earn a higher future resale value.European car makers design their vehicles to be safe as well. However, they use stronger parts because they DON'T want their cars to crumple. This leads to them lasting longer and gives them a better shelf life than their American counterparts.
Often times a foreign car costs more to insure because the parts can be harder to get and less body shops may work on them. Model: SE, SEL, GT, are all different versions of the same model. The fancier your vehicle typically the more expensive it is to insure.
A safety study finds European cars do better in frontal and side crashes while U.S. cars withstand rollovers better. That analysis found the European cars had driver-side mirrors that may reduce the incidence of lane-change crashes compared with their U.S.-made counterparts.
