In 1954, the national NAACP won the hard fought court battle Brown v. Board of Education. While the ruling was supposed to end legal segregation in schools, most states and cities, including Memphis and Tennessee, developed ways to circumvent the law.

In 1955, King became involved in his first major civil rights campaign in Montgomery, Alabama, where buses were racially segregated. King mobilized Montgomery's African American community to boycott the city's public transportation, demanding equal rights for all citizens on public transportation there.

In 2000, Utah became the last state to recognize MLK Day by name, the same year South Carolina became the final state to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a paid holiday for employees. While Alabama and Mississippi are the only states to combine Lee and King's day, the King holiday does go by different names.

Governor Bruce Babbitt declared Martin Luther King Jr. Day an Arizona holiday in March 18, 1986, but his proclamation was repealed by Governor Mecham in 1987 on the grounds Babbitt did not have the authority to declare such a holiday.
This year, Martin Luther King Day falls on Jan. 20, 2020 — the same date that the holiday was first observed in 1986. Though federal offices and most workplaces will be closed for the holiday on Monday, many stores and restaurants will remain open for business.
In November 1992, voters passed an Martin Luther King Civil Rights Day holiday. Arizona was the last state in the union to formally install an MLK holiday. (New Hampshire has a Civil Rights Day.) But Arizona was the only state to approve the MLK holiday by popular affirmation.
But it's just that, in all my years of being a black, never has anybody pulled me aside to wish me, personally, a “Happy Martin Luther King Day.” It's just not something you're supposed to say, is it? MLK Day is, unfortunately, a holiday that carries little meaning for most people.

- Federal and government services, including the United States Postal Service and the DMV.
- Most schools (though some states allow districts to decide themselves)
According to Bloomberg Law, 42 percent of employers in the United States gave employees the day off in 2018. Civil and nonprofit organizations such as universities and hospitals were the most likely to give employees the day off for the holiday; 72 percent gave them the day off with pay.
