domestic-servant. Noun. (plural domestic servants) A servant employed in a grand or middle class household.
As a parent, engaging a domestic helper enables you to spend more quality time with your kids rather than having to labour over mundane tasks. No matter how busy work keeps you, once you arrive home you'll be able to relax and spend time in ways that can strengthen the bond between you and your child.
Domestic helpers perform a variety of household services for an individual or a family, from providing care for children and elderly dependents to housekeeping, including cleaning and household maintenance. Other responsibilities may include cooking, laundry and ironing, shopping for food and other household errands.
Migrant domestic groups have also created coalitions with other organizations such as feminist groups, labor groups, groups for immigrant rights, religious, human rights organizations, and trade unions. In fact, given these domestic workers come from abroad, there were a number of “cross-border alliances” created.
So what does the law say a domestic worker in South Africa must earn, and is that a living wage? R15 an hourThe National Minimum Wage Act that came into effect at the beginning of 2019 says domestic workers must earn a minimum wage of R15 an hour.
Migrant domestic workers often live in the employers' home, facing not only the challenges of live-in domestics but also abuses within the recruitment system and from police and immigration authorities, including advance commission fees, withheld wages and passports, and verbal, physical, or sexual harassment.
Paying by bank transfer is strongly encouraged as both the employer and the domestic helper will have a record of payments. However, many domestic helpers do not have a bank account and/or may prefer being paid in cash. If this is the case, you should both sign a salary receipt every month and both keep a copy of this.
National Minimum Wage Increase. The national minimum wage rates, as specified in the National Minimum Wage Act, will increase by 3.8% from R20 per hour to R20,76 for employees. This minimum wage increase will be effective from 1 March 2020.
Contracts signed 27 September 2019 or earlier at the previous Minimum Allowable Wage of $4,520 per month and with food allowance of not less than $1,075 per month will still be processed by the Immigration Department (ImmD) provided that the applications reach ImmD on or before 25 October (Friday).

Specific groups of workers will also have an increase in their national minimum wage of 3.8%, as shown below: Farm workers: R18,68 per hour. Domestic workers: R15,57 per hour. Public works program: R11,42 per hour.
So there you have it. According to the law, domestic workers who work in bigger metropolitan areas, and who work for less than 27 hours per week, must be paid a minimum of R16. 03 per hour. All other domestic workers must be paid R15 per hour.
The new rate for the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for each ordinary hour worked will now be R20. 76. In terms of a notice as published in the Government Gazette and signed by Employment and Labour Minister, T.W Nxesi the new rate will be applicable on 01 March 2020.
A 2019 report by cleaning company SweepSouth found that there was an increase in the average national domestic worker wage to R2,699 per month after the minimum wage was introduced.

Domestic Workers are able to return to Work on level 3 – Here's What Employers need to know! Both Ministers have advised in their respective briefings to the media last week that Domestic Workers may return to work on Monday 1 June 2020, when level 3 of the lockdown will be phased in.
With the easing of lockdown regulations, only live-in domestic workers and caregivers have been allowed to return to work. All domestic workers will be allowed back at work only under level two restrictions. As a result, many of them will continue to go without incomes until the lockdown is relaxed further.

Do break down the chores into small chunks and let her accomplish her tasks one at a time.The lack of protection afforded to maids impact upon their dignity. Since maids are not given this protection, abuse of maids become more frequent. Despite a glaring lack of recognized laws to protect foreign domestic workers, there are laws which protect them against employer abuse.
The Labor Code of the Philippines defines “domestic or household service” as a "service in the employer's home" that provides convenience and personal comfort to the employer. Domestic helpers include maids, cooks, yayas (nannies) drivers and all-around helpers.
