British Columbia is banning most open-burning activities effective noon on Thursday. Campfires, defined as recreational fires that are no larger than 50 cm wide by 50 cm high, are not covered by the provincial ban.
However, Canada makes little use of the practice. Banff became the first national park in the country to perform a controlled burn in 1983, and since then, parks and provincial forestry departments in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario, including in Toronto's High Park, have only conducted them sparingly.
In reality, there are fires on both sides of the border. Throughout the summer, Mexico and Canada have experienced fires in their western regions, too — they just aren't marked on some maps that are only intended to show fires in the U.S.

The Oregon Department of Forestry declared fire season beginning on July 5, 2020, signaling the end of unregulated debris burning outdoors, a major cause of wildfires. In early September, unusually high winds and continued dry weather caused the rapid expansion of multiple wildfires in Oregon.
WARM SPRINGS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Welcome rain, over an inch in places, helped firefighters battling the Lionshead Fire, the largest among several still burning across Oregon. But accompanying winds pushed flames into unburned green islands well within the perimeter, putting up smoke on Wednesday.
Labor Day 2020 was that moment. Severe drought, extreme winds and multiple ignitions fueled the most destructive wildfires in state history. Roughly 1.07 million acres burned during the 2020 season, the second-most on record.
Smoke is primarily coming from wildfires in California. The Slater Fire in Southwest Oregon and Northern California also continues to produce smoke.
The Oregon towns of Detroit, Blue River, Vida, Phoenix, and Talent have been "substantially destroyed" by wildfire, Gov. Kate Brown said at a news conference on Wednesday. Canada Provides Assistance to California in Battle Against Historic Wildfires. California is facing historic wildfires in 2020, with more than 1.83 million acres burned so far across the state. “We are proud that Canadians are helping to fight those fires.”
Expected shifts in wildland fire patternsFire-prone conditions are predicted to increase across Canada. This could potentially result in a doubling of the amount of area burned by the end of this century, compared with amounts burned in recent decades.
With over 347 million hectares (ha) of forest, Canada has 9% of the world's forests. Forests dominate many Canadian landscapes, but cover only 38% of Canada's land area. The forest area of Canada is stable, with less than half of 1% deforested since 1990.

As fires burn, carbon stored in trees and other vegetation combusts, releasing carbon dioxide and other potent greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. This means that as fires increase, so do emissions.
Wildfires can be good and healthy for a forest. The fires clean the forest floors and allow beautiful flowers and mushrooms to return and grow. Fires also get rid of diseased trees and nasty bugs that can kill the trees. Some trees need the fire to release their seeds to grow, like Lodgepole pines.
Forest fires always start by one of two ways - naturally caused or human caused. Natural fires are generally started by lightning, with a very small percentage started by spontaneous combustion of dry fuel such as sawdust and leaves. On the other hand, human-caused fires can be due to any number of reasons.
Wildfires are a natural part of many environments. They are nature's way of clearing out the dead litter on forest floors. This allows important nutrients to return to the soil, enabling a new healthy beginning for plants and animals. Fires also play an important role in the reproduction of some plants.
Second, the climate in which forest fires start is incredibly dry. This means that there is plenty of fuel for the fire. Humidity is an enemy of forest fires and without the aid of the weather, humans end up combatting these fires on their own. This makes them even harder to control.
Preventing wildfires
- Report unattended fires.
- Extinguish fire pits and campfires when done.
- Don't throw lit cigarettes out of your moving car.
- Use caution when using flammable liquids.
- Pay attention to local ordinances for trash burning.
- Only use fireworks in clear areas with no woods nearby.
The BC Wildfire Service employs approximately 1,000 wildfire fighters each year.
