Female soldiers are now allowed to wear twists.The hairstyle, popular among black female soldiers, wasoutlawed in the March 31 update to AR 670-1. The Army hasrecanted. Under the new rules, braids, cornrows and twistscan be worn, with a diameter of no greater than a ½inch.
Lock, or loc, hairstyles and buns that span the width ofthe back of a female sailor's head will now be authorizedfor women in all uniforms. Ponytails will be OK inservice, working or physical-training uniforms -- provided there'sno operational safety concern.
During initial processing for Basic MilitaryTraining (BMT), male Airmen will have their heads completelyshaved. Female Airmen are not required to have haircut; however, hair must be worn up or short enough tonot touch the collar.

Female soldiers are allowed to dye(colour) their hair in only two natural tones, whichintegrate together. Female soldiers (with hair thatdescends past the collar of the uniform shirt) must have theirhair in a ponytail, with black or brown rubber bandsonly.
The official reason in the US forces is that it helpsthe gas mask fit better, which is nonsense. Female US soldierscan make a good seal on their mask just as easily asthe men, and they can just have their hair pinned upin combat. Most "short haired" soldiers only shave the face,and have regular haircuts.
Female Marines are required to maintainhair that is standard within the Marine Corpspopulation. Wash your wigs in lukewarm water with amild shampoo. Never wash wigs in steaming hot water as thiscan cause the braids to look chapped and because braidedwigs are synthetic, washing it with hot water willdamage the fibres and your braids will fallout.
