Yes, these two are the same. The reason the 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL notation is used is because it's short and consistent. Note: not all manufacturers make the same size , though. One MFR's XL can be different than another MFR's XL.

Size 1X is a plus size, and XXL is not a plus size. 1X is larger then XL. This is because L, XL, XXL are all in misses/women's sizing.

While a size XL is designed to fit a size 16/18, she may prefer to wear a size 1X which equates to a size 14/16. This is because the plus size section was designed with curves in mind. Numerical sizes are often labeled as 14W, 16W, 18W, and so on.

In boy's sizes, the largest t-shirts are XL (18–20). Once a boy has outgrown that size, the next size up is men's small. You can see that even though Jockey and Hanes are both saying that 18–20 is XL, the chest measurements and weights are different. So, on both of these charts, a size 20 is a 2XL.
Reply #1 - “In answer to your question, an XXL is the next size up from an XL (Girth, Sleeves, Length) A 2XL is the same dimensions as an XL in length with a little more girth. Plus size (2x) runs to 44"; Misses size (XXL) is 42".”

3X means that the waist circumference is three times that of large and tall means just about anything, but will work really well if the guy is 6'5""! The 3X waist will fit a 52" waist (Plus).

As has been mentioned XL is typically 16-18 which is considered a plus size, but there are some companies that assign XL to 14-16 (which is still technically considered to be a plus size.)
An XXL is generally the largest size in Misses clothing (very rarely do you see misses/straight sizes in a 20). An XXL fits like a 1X in my experience. An XXL is NOT the same as a 2X.

To convert men's pants sizes to women's, subtract 21 inches from the waist measurement of the men's pants. For example, men's pants with a 33-inch waist would be approximately a women's size 12. The inseam, typically the second measurement in men's pants sizes, will remain the same for women.
