New for Fitbit Charge HR & Fitbit Surge Users! Now your tracker will automatically recognize that you've done an exercise, identify the type of activity, and record it in the Fitbit app. You can also adjust the number of minutes you need to perform each activity in order for it to count towards your exercise goal.
The active minutes measurement tells you when you have spent at least 10 minutes in an activity that burns three times as many calories as you do at rest. 2? When you are at rest, your metabolic equivalent (MET) is 1. Fitbit uses a level of 3 MET or higher to indicate moderate-intensity exercise.

The GPS workouts get distance, pace, speed, time, heart rate – while workouts such as weights, for example, are about time, calories, heart rate and not rep counting or anything crazy specific. It's useful these are named, however, as it's good to see workouts correctly tagged in the app.

Your device may be fantastic for tracking heart rate and cardio, but a common weakness found across wearables is the ability to detect strength-training exercises. That's because Fitbit's PurePulse technology and Apple's similar heart sensor technology use LED lights to detect the amount of blood flow in your wrist.

Lee cites a long-term study of 10,000 men. "Men who climbed 20 to 34 floors of stairs per week — that's about 3 to 5 floors a day — had a 29 percent reduction of their risk of stroke," Lee says.
Fitbit devices that count floors have an altimeter sensor that detects when you go up in elevation. Your device registers 1 floor when you climb about 10 feet or 3 meters. Your device uses changes in barometric pressure combined with the steps you take to calculate floors climbed.
The Charge 4, Versa 2, Versa 3, Sense and Ionic boast an altimeter that measures stairs (or height) climbed. The Ace 3, Luxe and Inspire 2 do not include an altimeter. The Fitbit Sense, Versa 3 and Charge 4 are the only models in the lineup to have GPS built-in, without the need for a smartphone to be linked.
