The sand casting process involves the use of a furnace, metal, pattern, and sand mold. The metal is melted in the furnace and then ladled and poured into the cavity of the sand mold, which is formed by the pattern. The sand mold separates along a parting line and the solidified casting can be removed.
Gold casting is a part of the jewelry creation process. It allows designers and jewelry stores to take an idea or design, create a mold, and eventually end up with a physical reproduction of the final product. The gold casting process involves the following steps: Wax model and casting preparation.
The Sandcast Jewelry Method: Sandcast Native American is a style of Navajo jewelry was first created by silversmiths sometime between 1840 and 1860. The basis of this process is a mold made by carving the desired design into a stone. Using this mold, a piece of jewelry is made (belt buckle, bracelet, ring, etc.)
Casting is a process whereby a mould is made in the shape of the piece of jewellery or whatever is being cast. To put it simply (and the process is far more complex), metal is then poured into the mould, which then hardens and the cast is produced.
Disadvantage of Lost-Wax Moulding:1. This process limits the larger objects due to equipment size limits, 2. The cost of equipment and process is high.
Lost-wax process, also called cire-perdue, method of metal casting in which a molten metal is poured into a mold that has been created by means of a wax model. Once the mold is made, the wax model is melted and drained away.
A mixture of beeswax, linseed oil, and mineral spirits makes a paste that can be gently buffed into the metal. There are two main categories of synthetic wax: microcrystalline wax and paraffin wax. Microcrystalline wax is pliable and slightly sticky.
How to Make a Mold for Lost Wax Casting
- Step 1: Make a Plaster Mixture. Use two parts plaster powder to one part water.
- Step 2: Stir.
- Step 3: Imbed Wax Sculpture.
- Step 4: Allow Time to Set.
- Step 5: Pop the Mold Out of the Container.
- Step 6: Bake the Mold.

Castings can be made from an original wax model (the direct method) or from wax replicas of an original pattern that need not be made from wax (the indirect method). The following steps describe the indirect process, which can take two to seven days to complete.
Shape your melted gold.
- Pour the melted gold into the ingot mold or other mold before it hardens. Then, let the gold cool. The mold should be made from similar material as the crucible.
- Don't forget to clean up your mess! You never want to leave heat sources unattended or in the reach of children.
The silver will not melt the silicon mould but rather react with it. If it is silicon dioxide mould the silver could replace the silicon for oxygen. That is very exothermic ( exciting at a safe distance).
Make one final fold, folding the tinfoil strip in half horizontally and creasing firmly. Measure the foil strip to the appropriate length, making a crease. Place the long end of the foil strip inside the crease, and attach using two staples. Gently pull the foil outward in a circular motion to form into a ring shape.
