Grain is a word used in film photography to describe the fineness of detail a film or paper is capable of capturing.
To quickly add grain to your photos, add a film-like filter to your images. Alternatively, use a photo editing programme to add graininess yourself. Both these methods are quick and easy, and will give you beautiful grainy photos.
Mextures is a great easy to use app to apply textures, light leaks, grit and grain, and radiance. The app includes some great basic editing tools as well and has an ability to layer texture effects on top of other effects.
The Grunge filter adds a random texture to the image while changing the colors throughout the image and drawing attention to a portion of your image with both a vignette and center focus effect. When the filter is first opened, a control is available at the center of the image.
Once you've added the filter you want, it's time to add grain. Select the adjustments menu, the second option from the left in the bottom menu, and scroll to the rightmost part to find the grain slider. For subtler effects, keep the grain slider below 50. To add more, go beyond that.
