How to Safely Pack Framed Artwork for Shipping?
- Tape the glass. No one wants it to happen, but the truth is that the glass can break during the shipment.
- Wrap the artwork. Once the glass is taped, use bubble wrap to cover your artwork.
- Choose the box.
- Label the box.
- Wrap in tissue paper.
- Place in a heavy duty cardboard envelope or if possible roll and send in a rigid tube, seal and clearly mark package PHOTOGRAPHS - DO NOT BEND.
Properly Packaging your Canvas
- Cover your entire canvas with packing paper, taping it so that no part of the canvas is exposed.
- Wrap the whole canvas in a couple layers of bubble wrap and tape it so that it stays in place.
- If you have any more room, tape on another layer of foam sheets for additional protection.
The best ways to pack and ship framed pieces to ensure they arrive safely include using cling film, using edge guards and corner protectors, having air cushions or insulating foam in the box and around the piece, and having a seriously sturdy box for shipment.
Place one or two layers of corrugated cardboard or mount board on both sides of the art package. Make sure that the cardboard is at least 2 inches larger than the wrapped original. Tape around the outside of the cardboard pieces so they stay together and the corners of the original are protected from impact damage.

Find a box that is a few inches larger than your artwork.

Large paintings that are over 30 inches in one dimension usually cost at least $50 to ship via UPS or Fedex. 30 inches is when the price jumps for shipping, so don't be surprised if the package gets close to or over $100 to ship – especially when shipping across the country.
When packing the box and loading it on the moving truck, keep the packed picture on its side, not flat. The picture will absorb pressure easier on an edge than when flat. Pack pictures on their edges and in a place where they won't fall over. Wedge them between heavy objects that will not shift during the move.
Wrap your glass item in a layer of packing paper or newspaper and secure it in place with a piece of tape. Then wrap the glass in several layers of bubble wrap and tape it in place. Your glass should be covered in three to four layers of bubble wrap when you're done.
Crumple 10 to 12 sheets of packing paper and put them in the bottom of the interior (slightly smaller) mirror box half. Slide the wrapped oil painting into the mirror box, pushing it down gently but firmly onto the crumpled paper. Crumple more packing paper and put it in the top (slightly larger) mirror box half.
Instructions:
- Lay the item you wish to wrap on a flat surface.
- Lay out the Bubble Wrap with the bubble side facing upwards.
- Place your item on top of the Bubble Wrap.
- Wrap up the item entirely in the Bubble Wrap multiple times.
- Pack your wrapped item as desired.
Wrap the painting in bubble wrap with the bubbles facing away from, rather than against, the surface. Do not wrap a painted surface in bubble wrap. If the painting is framed, reinforce the frame corners with cardboard. Place the wrapped painting in a slightly larger, sturdy box.
