The idea that all sash windows are draughty, cold and difficult to maintain is a myth. As a temporary solution, even old sash windows can be brought up to scratch with some relatively simple fixes, such as draught-proofing and double-glazing.
Double glazed or triple glazedOne of the most common ways to improve old sash windows is to replace the existing single glazed panes with either double or triple glazing.
London Sash Window prices range from £825 to £1,398, including the cost of installation. The cost of sash windows will change depending on the width, height, colour, glass designs and finish of the unit. Every installation needs to be assessed to be provided with exact sash windows prices.
Draught-proofing your home – be safe
- extractor fans: these quickly remove damp air from moisture-dense rooms like kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.
- under-floor grilles or airbricks that help keep wooden beams and floors dry.
- wall vents: allow small amounts of fresh air into rooms.
For draught proofing doors and sash windows the best products to use are tack-on sprung metal or plastic strips. These can either feature a rubber strip or a compressible rubber seal.
Press the adhesive side of the strip to the inside of the window frame, in the groove that the sash fits into. Then fold the material over, and stick the extra inch (the part you left the backing on) up under the sash. Drive finish nails through the weather stripping into the jamb to hold it securely.
Here are seven methods of keeping cold air from coming through your windows and doors.
- Use Weather Strips. Weather strips are an inexpensive way to seal doors and windows in your home.
- Install New Door Sweeps.
- Apply Foam Tape.
- Insulate with Window Film.
- Hang Insulated Curtains.
- Re-Caulk Windows and Doors.
- Use a Door Snake.
The answer to that question is usually no, unless you are looking to soundproof the rooms, as it is not a wall that loses heat to the outside. Draught proofing is slightly different. Draughts between rooms can make you feel colder, even if the air itself isn't colder.
Light an incense stick and pass it around the edges of common leak sites. Wherever the smoke wavers or is sucked out of or blown into the room, there's a draft. You can also use a damp hand to locate leaks; any drafts will feel cool to your hand.
Door sweeps for winter-proofIt will seal the gap between the door and the threshold. For the aluminum or steel door, the sweep comes in U-shape and slides underneath them. You can also choose a form of metal strip attached to the bottom of the door and the rubber, brush vinyl, or felt seal attached to the strip.
So, Why Do They Get Drafty? With old windows, the glazing putty may have grown brittle and fallen away, leaving the glass rattling in place. Double-hung sashes of wood windows can shrink with age and wear, letting in cold air. Even newer vinyl or aluminum windows may have worn-out gaskets and weather stripping.
Drafts usually occur due to a problem with a window's weatherstripping or seal. This defect can appear around the outside edge of the frame, where the frame and the glass meet, or anywhere that panes of glass overlap, open, or move.
If you notice draughts coming from your double glazed windows, this is usually a sign that the windows are not closing properly. To diagnose the problem, close the window and check the side with the hinges. If there is a gap between the sash and the frame, then this means your hinges are damaged.
The following fixes will stop the drafts and leave your windows and doors operational.
- Lock Your Windows and Apply Weatherstripping.
- Weatherproof Your Exterior Doors.
- Reglaze Loose Windowpanes.
- Use Physical Barriers on Drafty Doors.
- Layer Your Window Treatments.
- Fill in the Gaps to Seal Windows.

Blinds, Curtains and ShuttersSpecially created to fit neatly around windows and reduce heat loss, heat loss prevention blinds can reduce the amount of warm air that escapes through single glazed windows, reducing your fuel bills and making your home more efficient.
Regardless of what material your window is made of, there is no difference in the adjustment process. All steps are the same, meaning you can adjust uPVC windows the same way as aluminum or wooden ones. Old wooden frames often do not need to be adjusted.
As heat rises, it creates a pressure vacuum that sucks cold air in from cracks and gaps at the foundation. For every unit of heated air that goes out of the house, a new unit of outside (cold!) air is drawn in. And there it is—the giant vacuum effect that makes your house feel cold and drafty.
If you're noticing drafts around the sides or bottom of your window, you may need to adjust the screws on the inside of the window frame which raise or lower the height of the sash.
