Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) or Sriharikota Range (SHAR) is a rocket launch centre (spaceport) operated by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It is located in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV)The first experimental flight of SLV-3, in August 1979, was a failure. The first successful launch took place on 18 July, 1980. It was a four-stage rocket with all solid-propellant motors. The first launch of the SLV took place in Sriharikota on 10 August 1979.
An East Coast location was desirable because any rockets leaving Earth's surface and traveling eastward get a boost from the Earth's west-to-east spin. Earth can be thought of as a three-dimensional record, the farthest point from the central point around which the planet spins would be at the equator, NASA said.
Why do rockets curve when they fly into space instead of going straight up? A: If a rocket just flew straight up, then it would fall right back down to Earth when it ran out of fuel! Rockets have to tilt to the side as they travel into the sky in order to reach orbit, or a circular path of motion around the Earth.
As part of their educational tour, the school management took the students to the space centre to gain practical knowledge about science and technology. ISRO experts explained the working models of rockets, environmental conditions, operation of rockets etc.
ISRO, which was earlier inward-looking and non-communicative organisation, is gradually opening up. The organisation has also decided to allow people to visit satellite and launch facilities, till now a highly restrictive place, with the objective to educate them on space assets and applications.
At present, there are no appropriate facilities for accommodating more number of visitors to view the launch at Sriharikota. This would allow thousands of viewers to witness the launch. Space Museum provides a tell-tale account of the Indian Space Programme from its infancy.

Chandrayaan-2 mission is a highly complex mission, which represents a significant technological leap compared to the previous missions of ISRO. It comprised an Orbiter, Lander and Rover to explore the unexplored South Pole of the Moon. Subsequently communication from lander to the ground stations was lost.
Thumba became well-known to the outsiders after the establishment of Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS), which was the first of that kind in India.
Sullurpeta is the nearest town to Sriharikota. It is about 20 km away. Sullurpet is fairly well-connected to Chennai, which is about 80 km from there. To get to Sullurpeta from Chennai, get to the CMBT(Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus) at Koyambedu in Chennai.
It is located in Trivandrum, in the Indian state of Kerala. The centre had its beginnings as the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) in 1962. It was renamed in honour of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, often regarded as the father of the Indian space program.
