In modern politics, a state is an association which has control over a geographic area or territory. States are seen as having three main pieces: Having control over a geographic area, or known as a territory. A people, which is the population of the known state. So basically US states aren't countries, but they have certain qualities that make them akin to a country. The power that they hold has, historically speaking, ebbed and flowed, and will continue to do so as long as the United States exists.
Most commonly, the idea of a nation-state was and is associated with the rise of the modern system of states, often called the “Westphalian system” in reference to the Treaty of Westphalia (1648). The most obvious impact of the nation-state is the creation of a uniform national culture through state policy.
It must have a territory, with a permanent population, subject to the control of a government, and the capacity to conduct international relations (sovereignty). Territorial integrity, along with sovereignty and political independence, form the "triumvirate of rights" that states enjoy under international law.
In order to be legitimate, a new country must be recognized by existing states within the international community. Each existing state bestows recognition at its own discretion, and several entities (including Taiwan, Palestine and Kosovo) are recognized as legitimate states by some countries, but not by others.
Up until the end of World War I, the Palestinians were subjects of the Ottoman Empire. When the mandate ended in 1948, with the founding of the State of Israel, the Palestinians became definitively stateless. Some 750,000 of them became stateless refugees, having been driven from their ancestral homeland.
They are thus “stateless nations”. Examples of stateless nations: The Kurds currently reside in Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Turkey, but they have not established an internationally-recognized state based on their national identity.
This view is called anarchism. Almost every place on Earth is connected to one and only one government. Places without government are where people follow traditions instead of government rules, small border disputed areas and the continent of Antarctica, because almost no people live there.
So, a nation is an intersubjective reality and exists solely in the collective imagination of the citizens. Even if a person comes to believe that a nation does not exist, the nation will remain unharmed, as it is not a subjective reality which exists in the mind of a single person.

Our own sense of who we are, and what we are, is overwhelmingly shaped by our sense of nation, as it is for every Western country.

Moreover Japan traditionally seen as an example of a nation-state and also the largest of the nation states, with population in excess of 120 million. Akihito is the current Emperor of Japan.
