Avira Free Software Updater is a free program to check if updates are available for installed programs on a Windows machine. The program scans the system when you run it, and lists all programs that are outdated after a brief moment.
The Avira icon may be hidden behind the up arrow to the left of your system tray icons. In the Avira Antivirus window, click Extras > Configuration. To disable notification sounds, click General > Acoustic Alerts in the configuration window. Select the “No warning” option here.

To remove the password protection you have to edit the file AVWIN.INI.
- Go to C:ProgramDataAviraAntivirusCONFIG.
- Right-click on the AVWIN. INI file and open it with the Editor.
- Edit the file under the entry [COMMON] Password= SecurityExtension=0x00000000.
- Save and close the file.
- Restart your PC.
There is no free upgrade path to Windows 10 from XP or Vista. To upgrade to Windows 10 from a machine running XP or Vista, you either have to buy an actual copy of Windows 10 (in which case, you might as well just keep the old boxes sitting in their bins in the garage) or first upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Installing software from the Web
- Locate and download an .exe file.
- Locate and double-click the .exe file. (It will usually be in your Downloads folder.)
- A dialog box will appear. Follow the instructions to install the software.
- The software will be installed.
Windows update is mostly safe to do while performing other tasks, with the caveat that if a file needs to be replaced, it must not be open for read/write at that time. Nowadays, Windows is good about replacing files during shutdown and restart, making file replacements safer.
