Devil May Cry 4 (2008) took the spotlight away from Dante and placed it upon the shoulders of Nero, a Holy Knight in the Order of the Sword. Set after Devil May Cry 2 on the fictional island of Fortuna, the game kicked off with Dante killing Sanctus – the Order's High Priest – in front of Nero.
Nero and Dante befriend each other. The original game features Nero and Dante as playable characters while the Special Edition features Vergil, Lady and Trish as bonus playable characters, each with new opening and ending movies.

Devil May Cry 6 Release DateWhile Capcom is yet to address the existence of a sixth game, longtime leaker Dusk Golem has revealed that the game is in development. They noted that fans should "get ready to wait for several years", meaning it's likely only in the early stages of being worked on.

Devil May Cry is mostly known for its mechanics so if you purely want a mostly incredible combat game and are going to skip the cutscenes, then you can jump straight into Devil May Cry 5. Since these two games have fairly low stakes in Devil May Cry 5, it's safe to not play them.

Devil May Cry 4 is a hack and slash action-adventure game developed and published by Capcom in 2008 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows platforms. It is the fourth installment in the Devil May Cry series and is written by Bingo Morihashi and directed by Hideaki Itsuno.
It was confirmed that Nero and Kyrie were still very much a couple as her vocal cameos had her encourage Nero in his path. The significance of this is the fact that it would make Nero the first married protagonist in the series, with no one from Dante, Vergil, Lady, or Trish ever having gotten hitched.
In DMC5, it would make Dante and Vergil be 44, while Nero would be 25 (or 23 if we go by the novel). Since, Capcom have been vague about the ages, it's up to everyone's interpretation, we don't have exact ages, mostly estimates, the twins are in their 40s and Nero is in his early 20s and that's it.
Devil May Cry 4: Deadly Fortune: Deadly Fortune is the japanese released novelization version of the Devil May Cry 4, written by Bingo Morihashi, who also wrote the video-game's story. Any events that is able to fit within the story of the video-game, however, is canon.
Chronologically, Devil May Cry 4 is the third game in the series – before the rebooted DmC game came about in 2013 – following on from Devil May Cry 3 which was a prequel to the original Devil May Cry, but before Devil May Cry 2, continuing the story of lead protagonist Dante whilst also introducing a new character

The first game in the time line is Devil May Cry 3, followed by Devil May Cry, then Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5. The anime series, which is canon to the games, takes place between the original Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 4.
The original Devil May Cry 4 feels like half a game. Once you reach the midpoint of its 20 missions as the blade-wielding, gun-toting, demon-armed Nero, you fight back through the same locations as usual series hero, Dante.
Devil May Cry 5 is a demanding, combo-intensive game, even on its most basic difficulty mode, called simply Human (in a game world where demons spear and tear human bystanders right and left, it's an insult).
Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition – unlike so many next-gen re-releases – is a premium remaster, so there's no free PS4 to PS5 path here. Fortunately, the Japanese publisher has incorporated some pretty huge new features and modes, including the addition of fan favourite Vergil as a playable character.
Apart from the new character, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition also has other upgrades. The next-gen hardware makes the game look amazing and run smoothly in general, but the new tech enables two specific options that I enjoyed. The first is turbo mode, which increases the game's speed.
With the game's release, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is considered an entirely separate title, with a new trophy list tied to the player's account. For players, this means that the game does not feature an upgrade path from the original Devil May Cry 5 release.

Overall, Devil May Cry 5's Vergil DLC does exactly what you'd imagine. You can play through all of the game's missions and Bloody Palace with Vergil and he's a great character.
