Current law says it's legal to kill or attempt to kill a grizzly bear in self-defense, or if the bear is “in the act of attacking or killing” livestock.
The mountain is a place of prayer, meditation, and peace. Human artifacts have been found on or near Bear Butte that date back 10,000 years, indicating a long and continuous interest in the mountain. The Cheyenne and Lakota people have maintained a spiritual interest in Bear Butte from their earliest recorded history.

Bear Butte, a 4,426-foot mountain, rests on the northernmost part of the Black Hills. It has been a sacred site to the Northern Plains Indians for thousands of years. To the native Lakota, Bear Butte has long been a place to hold council meetings and ceremonies such as vision quests and Sun dances.
The last obvious difference between these two bears is their face shape. A black bear has a straight profile, from the nose to the top of the head being a straight and steady slope. A grizzly bear on the other hand has a visible distinction, an indent from the snout to the forehead.

Montana law requires that all big game hunters and those accompanying them (including guide/outfitter) must wear at least 400 square inches of Hunter Orange above the waist. A hat or cap alone is not sufficient.
Bear Butte, located northeast of Sturgis, has cultural significance to many tribes. The Northern Cheyenne Tribe already owns more than 500 acres around the mountain, while the Rosebud Sioux Tribe owns ground at the northwest corner of Bear Butte.

That is where we can find the closest thing to a volcano in South Dakota. It's what is known today as Bear Butte. It is also known as Mato Paha or Bear Mountain to the Lakota and Noahvose to the Cheyenne. But, Bear Butte is a geological laccolith.
