The ii-V-i Progression
The minor key ii-V-i progression is made up of a diminished triad (ii°), major triad (V) and a minor triad (i). In many styles, this progression uses seventh chords: half-diminished 7th (iiØ7), dominant 7th (V7), and minor 7th (i7). In the key of A minor the progression would be Bm7♭5 – E7 – Am7.C major and G major, along with their relative minor counterparts A minor and E minor, are often considered the best key and scales for Pop music. You can use Major or Minor scales. However, if you want the song to have a happy or upbeat feeling, then the Major scale is best.

1 Answer. It depends on how you define "chords," but I assume you mean "tertian sonorities" like triads and seventh chords. If so, the music theorist Johannes Lippius discussed the "harmonic triad" in his Synopsis musicae novae (Synopsis of New Music) in 1612.

- I – V -vi – IV. This might be the most popular chord progression in western pop music.
- I – IV – V. This chord progression may be considered the foundation of classic rock 'n' roll, modern rock, and pop music.

In short: So many songs sound the same because they use the same underlying sequence of chords. Different keys, different arrangements, different styles – but the same progression!
