Try to remember the last time you had a cut that was healing and how itchy it started to get around 5-8 days later. This is the MOST important time to keep that e-collar on! So, let's recap. After your dog or cat has had surgery (no matter how old or young they are) you MUST keep them restricted for fourteen days.

The cone should stay on until the site is fully healed, and/or the sutures are removed. Most sutures and staples are left in for 10-14 days. Other lesions may take less or more time than that to heal completely.

Letting the cat stay inside the house also gives you the opportunity to monitor your pet closely in terms of activity levels and healing process.

Jumping is a no-no right after neutering surgery. When you bring your kitty home from neutering surgery, he will likely feel a little groggy and out of it. After all, the little guy just went through a lot, from the scary and unfamiliar surroundings to the anesthesia.
Restrict your cat's activity for a period of 7-14 days, to allow the incision to begin healing. Do not allow your cat to jump or engage in any strenuous activity that could cause excessive stretching of the surgical incision, especially in the first few days after the operation.

A recent spay incision should be a clean, straight wound and the edges should be sealed with glue, stitches or staples. The skin will be slightly swollen and a slight reddish-pink color around the edges. As the incision heals, you will want to check the area for redness, swelling or discharge.
