In a 1 on 1, this is a battle pitched in favor of the elephant. It's stronger, has more reach, and is heavier. The rhino does have speed in its favor, and if it can get in range, it can strike a fatal blow. Whichever animal strikes first wins, and that's more than likely going to be the elephant.
Some predators like crocodiles and lions are known to hunt calves but even adults can be took down. These are the main hippo killers. Other animals are able to kill hippos and may have done that. Bull sharks can swim into fresh water and may occasionally find hippos to eat their calves.
When a hippo's skin is able to handle intense cold, pressure, and has a 6in layer of fat,. I know how animals fight. Speed does make a difference in some cases. If the Polar Bear is able to attack the Hippos neck before or after the Hippo attacks, it'll win.
Lions are the rhinos natural predator and even they rarely attack adults. Rhino calves are mainly targeted by lions but some weak, injured and old adults have been reportedly killed by the felines. As spectators got closer they could clearly see both the lions and their kill, a fully grown female rhino!
Hippos also kill animals larger than gorillas. Aside from lions, they have also killed Nile crocodiles, which are over twice the size of a gorilla. A hippo can easily kill a gorilla, they have much larger teeth, and a far stronger bite, the strongest of any land mammal.
So, the rhino will most likely get killed by a big pride of lions. To sum up, we all agree that both the rhino and lion are some of the most energetic animals we know. They all have dominant features that make them well adapted to the environment and for defense. The rhino is way too strong to be put down by one lion.
The rhino wins. The largest grizzly bears are still less than half the size of the average rhino. As you can see in this picture, a rhino has a small neck and a big head.
Heaviest land mammals
| Rank | Name | Mass |
|---|
| 5 | Black rhinoceros | 680–1,810 kg (1,500–4,000 lb) |
| 6 | Hippopotamus | 1,100–1,500 kg (2,500–3,300 lb) |
| 7 | Gaur | 450–1,360 kg (1,000–3,000 lb) |
| 8 | American bison | 320–1,000 kg (700–2,200 lb) |
Among animals, the largest species are all marine mammals, specifically whales. The blue whale is believed to be the largest animal to have ever lived. The largest land animal classification is also dominated by mammals, with the African bush elephant being the largest of these.
The Etruscan shrew shares the title of world's smallest mammal with a fascinating creature from Thailand: Kitti's hog-nosed bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai), also known as the bumblebee bat. It gets its nickname from its size — barely over an inch long — which makes it about the size of a large bumblebee!
Asian Gaur. The Asian Gaur is the largest and heaviest species of cattle in the world and is endemic to South Asia. Males are significantly larger than females and can weigh up to 2500 pounds.
Hippos. Found in sub-Saharan Africa is the world's second largest land animal. Funny thing is, hippos are actually semi-aquatic mammals, meaning they spend a majority of their day in rivers and lakes. It's how they keep their over 2,000-pound body cool under the blazing African sunshine!
Although both animals come in multiple species, white rhinoceroses are the biggest of all rhinos, and common hippopotamuses are the bigger of the two existing hippo varieties. White rhinoceroses, however, are larger than common hippopotamuses, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
The conservation charity Save China's Tigers stated "Recent research indicates that the tiger is indeed stronger than the lion in terms of physical strength. A tiger is generally physically larger than a lion. Most experts would favor a Siberian and Bengal tiger over an African lion."
A rhino has the potential to hurt and possibly kill an elephant, but the elephant's greater size, strength, height and intelligence means unless there is an entire herd of rhinos, the elephant will win.
Rhinos can swim.
A few sources here and there say that rhinos cannot swim. It's not true: they can, as can those other mammals (pigs, camels, giraffes) sometimes said to be incapable of this action. It would even more easily kill a hippo. The hippo in the report below came too close to an elephant calf. The hippos, like all bullies, only take on opponents that have no chance against them. Nothing, absolutely nothing, but the killer homo sapiens can take on an adult elephant.
This Hippo Isn't Bothered by a Lion Attack. Another animal you don't want to get too close to in the wild is the lion. Although the big cats usually hunt easier prey than hippos, they might still go after nature's tanks. In this video, a lion latches onto a hippo's rump in a vain attempt to take the river horse down.
The case of the rhinoceros is particularly devastating and infuriating. Rhinos are intelligent, social, emotional animals that are a vital part of Africa's tourism industry and its legacy. Recently, the Western black rhino was declared extinct by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
Construction is now underway with the expanded breeding facility scheduled to open in Spring 2019. In 2018, the death of the last male northern white rhino, a member of a functionally-extinct subspecies of white rhino, garnered a lot of public attention. Ten years ago, roughly 20,800 rhinos roamed Earth.
The black rhino has a reputation for being extremely aggressive, and charges readily at perceived threats. They have even been observed to charge tree trunks and termite mounds. Adult rhinos normally have no natural predators, thanks to their imposing size as well as their thick skin and deadly horns.
The northern subspecies has very few remaining individuals, with only two confirmed left in 2018 (two females; Fatu, 18 and Najin, 29), both in captivity. Sudan, the world's last known male northern white rhinoceros, died in Kenya on 19 March 2018.
Rhinos sleep standing up or lying down and can sleep up to 8 hours a day at intervals. They can be found dozing under a tree during a hot day, but when they take a deep sleep, they lie down with their feet curled up slightly to the one side. They sleep very deeply and can easily be approached.
Black rhinos are the smaller of the two African rhino species. However, the black rhino is still considered critically endangered, and a lot of work remains to bring the numbers up to even a fraction of what it once was—and to ensure that it stays there.
How Paleontologists Uncovered the World's Biggest Rhino. Standing 16 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing 20 tons, Paraceratherium was one of the largest mammals to ever walk the Earth.
The largest mouth of all land animals belongs to the hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) of Africa which can open its jaws to almost 180°. In a fully grown male hippo, this equates to an average gape of 1.2 m (4 ft).
Rhino poaching has escalated in recent years and is being driven by the demand for rhino horn in Asian countries, particularly Viet Nam. Rhino horn is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but increasingly common is its use as a status symbol to display success and wealth.
Elephants are the only mammal that can't jump
Although, unlike elephants, hippos and rhinos can have all four feet off the ground at the same time when they run.Based on the Asian black market value, rhino horn is estimated to be worth US$65,000 per kg.
The horns are made of keratin, the same type of protein that makes up hair and fingernails. Both African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros have two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceros have a single horn.
With an absence of security, rhinos may continue to be poached regardless of whether they have been dehorned. So during any dehorning exercise a stub of horn will remain: although poaching is made less profitable, the sad reality is that poachers will still kill for a horn stub due to its high value.
