These numbers come in handy for calculating a handicap after you have played some rounds. For example, say you go out and shoot an 85 over 18 holes. You could then look up the course and subtract the course rating from your score, in this case 85-71 = 14.
If you have a zero handicap, you are considered a scratch golfer, and you would shoot par most times you went out to play. If you have a twenty handicap, it means you would shoot about 92 each time you go out to play.
The maximum score for each hole played is limited to a net double bogey – which is equal to Par of the hole + 2 strokes (double bogey) + any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on that hole based on their Course Handicap.
How often should you play to your handicap? Taking each component of the Handicap System formula into consideration, at the end of the day, playing to your handicap actually happens only once out of four to five rounds. But don't get discouraged – there's a good reason the USGA came up with this probability.
Put simply: if you're a 10 handicap, net double bogey would be a triple bogey — or a 7 on a par 4 — on the course's 10 toughest holes, and a double bogey on the remaining eight holes. Similarly, for a 14 handicap, a net double bogey would be a triple bogey on the 14 toughest holes, and a double bogey on the other four.
If you want to break 80, spend a majority of your practice time working on shots 125 yards and closer. This is what matters most. Because even if you are hitting fairways and greens, a bad short game can ruin it. A strong short game makes golf so much easier.
You will need to find the course rating and slope of the golf property you played on. Subtract the course rating from your score and multiple by 113. Divide the product by the slope listed on your scorecard (115 in the example) to obtain your handicap differential.
The Lowest Round in PGA Tour HistoryThe best score for one round of golf in a PGA Tour tournament is 58. That score has been posted only once so far, and it was by Jim Furyk. Furyk's all-time record round of 58 happened in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut.
Only about 2 percent of all golfers ever break 80, which generally is considered the Holy Grail of scoring. Eleven of the world's best golfers failed to break 80 last week during the PGA Championship.
90 is a good score for most anyone. You'd be surprised to learn that most golfers rarely break 100. 18 over would be perfect bogey golf, but if you were given a handicap and you consistently should around 18 over (your 90), your handicap might be slightly lower than that number.
The average 9 hole golf score ranges from 40 to 70, but it's usually only the pros who can get a score of 40 or below. A score that breaks 60 is considered to be average when playing 9 holes of golf. Regular, non-professional golfers should make it a goal and aim for a score below 50.
Scoring for Adult BeginnersAccording to National Golf Foundation data, 45% of all golfers average more than 100 strokes per round. With that said, it is believed that a 108 is considered to be a good score for a beginner golfer, which equates to double bogey on each hole of a par 72 course.
Golf courses normally have a par that ranges between 70 and 72; any score that is at par or under par is considered good.
A good golf score is a maximum of 108 strokes, while a bad score is considered to be 120 strokes or higher. Since golf is such a complex sport, there are many degrees of skill levels.
Average Distances for Men
| Club | Short Hitter | Long Hitter |
|---|
| 2 Wood | 190 yds | 245 yds |
| 3 Wood | 180 yds | 235 yds |
| 4 Wood | 175 yds | 200 yds |
| 5 Wood | 170 yds | 210 yds |
A good golf handicap is usually below 10. This would mean that a player with a handicap of 10 typically shoots around 82 for 18-holes. The average golf handicap for men and women golfers is around 15.
If you score 100 points playing a 18 hole course and the par is approximately 72, your average score works out to be 28. Every time you play rounds, your handicap values can be recalibrated.
Pre-2020 the calculation to find the Course Handicap was: Handicap Index X Slope Rating/ 113. The new calculation for Course Handicap will be Handicap Index x (Slope Rating/113) + (Course Rating- Par). The reason for this change is to accommodate players who play off different tees.

What is a CONGU Handicap? A CONGU® Handicap, awarded by a club affiliated to one of the five National Unions/Associations that administer amateur golf in Great Britain and Ireland, is recognised by National golfing authorities and clubs throughout the world as indicative of the golfing capability of the holder.
If a golfer has a handicap between 10 and 18, she is a skilled player with a moderate handicap. Basically, a handicap of 10 means the player consistently shoots 10 strokes higher than the difficulty rating of the courses she plays regularly. According to the Golf Channel, the average score for all U.S. golfers is 100.

If your course handicap is 18 and you're playing just to post a score for handicap purposes (you're not playing against someone in a match, in other words), then 18 is how many strokes you get to take. If you are playing against someone in a match, then the golfers play off the low handicap of the group.
A pretty good handicap for an amateur club golfer. Most golfers who are members of a club have handicaps, but many casual players do not. A handicap of 6 would put you somewhere in the top 10% of amateur club golfers. If you got that down to 3 you would be in the top 3%.
Scratch and bogey golfers are two very different types of players. Scratch golfers are good enough to be professional players, while a bogey golfer is an average player who can only dream of competing on a pro circuit.
