The destruction of ozone -- a form of oxygen in three-atom clusters -- is nothing new in the atmosphere. "Ozone," as Stolarski puts it, "is a renewable resource." Ozone's life cycle takes place mainly in a slab of atmosphere called the stratosphere, the second layer up from the ground.
The ozone layer is a thin part of the Earth's atmosphere that absorbs almost all of the sun's harmful ultraviolet light. "Ozone holes" are popular names for areas of damage to the ozone layer.
Freshwater MPS Chlorine Free Oxidizer is a Non-chlorine shock. Shocking your spa is essential to maintaining a clean hot tub. Oxidizers are used as an alternative to shocking your spa by intentionally over chlorinating your spa. This gives you the benefit of being able to get back into your spa and enjoy it faster.
Because chlorine-free shocks have a lower pH than their chlorinated counterparts, swimming can resume just 15 minutes after the shock it added. The main disadvantage of non-chlorine shock is that it does not kill algae of pathogenic bacteria (the stuff that makes you sick).
What does MPS do to pH compared to bleach? MPS is net-acidic when added to the water (lowers pH).
So what's the point? When there is a high level of organic waste in the pool, the available chlorine is used up attacking that, giving bacteria free reign to grow. Non-chlorine shock oxidizes the organics and helps clarify pool water. This allows the free chlorine to do its job of attacking bacteria and algae instead.
For many of the reasons outlined in point 2, Non Chlorine Shock can help improve water clarity fast. If you have milky or cloudy hot tub water but your chlorine levels, PH and alkalinity are ok then Non Chlorine Shock will oxidise the products causing this and help restore your water to crystal clear.
Chloramines can be removed from pool water by the following four methods:
- By adding a high dose of chlorine, liquid or granular chlorine.
- By adding a non-chlorine shock, aka MPS to the water.
- By adding ozone to the water.
- By adding Zeolite sand to a sand filter, to replace regular filter sand.

We recommend that you allow the sanitizer levels to break down naturally. But if you have to use your hot tub, then you can add sodium thiosulfate to the water. Sodium thiosulfate will break down both chlorine and bromine in your water. This will lower the bromine or chlorine levels fast so you can soak sooner.
If your MPS levels are low, that means you still have organics floating around in your spa, creating havoc and cloudy water! So, the moral to the story is, start off by adding about 1 tablespoon per person of oxidizer to your water after each use. Run the jets on a clean cycle, about ten minutes, and then test for MPS.
