The original name of the territory, Putucceri, is derived from the Tamil words putu (“newâ€) and ceri (“villageâ€). The French corrupted this to Pondichéry (English: Pondicherry), by which it was called until its name was officially changed to Puducherry in 2006.
Yanam was under the French rule for more than two centuries. It was liberated in 1954. It is now one of the component parts of the Pondicherry State. It is a small area of 8 square miles in exent, situated on the left bank of the eastern branch of the Godavary River in Andhra Pradesh.
In 1674 the Governor of “La Compagnie française des Indes orientales†(French East India Company) François Martin, set up a trading centre at Pondicherry and this outpost eventually became the chief French settlement in India.

Plage Paradiso island or paradise beach is an isolated beach from the main land by the Chunnambar backwaters about 7kms south of the picturesque town of Pondicherry town. The real name of the beach is Chunnambar beach but its popularly known as the Paradise island/beach due to the beauty of the island.
Pondy is completely safe at night. But the markets, bars and eateries shut down by 11.00pm. As such there is no night life in Pondy , if you are expecting something similar to Goa with regards to night life, then Pondy is not the place. You can find bars in french colony which is just parallel to the beach.
