On the other hand, even if you do have a large tank and enough algae, Plecos are not capable of scraping the algae completely away from any surface in the tank, including the glass, so you will always be left with a thin, but noticeable, coating of algae.
"No" to Multiple Plecos TogetherThey often do wonderfully alongside other types of community freshwater fish. When plecos reach maturity, they simply cannot get along with fellow plecos. Why Does My Fish Tank Have So Much Algae? Algae is caused by an imbalance of nutrients and lighting in your aquarium. If you give them too much light and not enough nutrients as building blocks to grow, the algae will take advantage of the excess light and multiply.
The best hair algae eaters are siamese algae eaters, amano shrimp, rosy barbs, and nerite snails. Livebearers, such as mollies, platies, and guppies can also be trained to eat hair algae.
Change the water regularly to keep nutrients low and if you have plants, use a liquid fertiliser to actually strengthen the plants and help them to fight off algae naturally. If the tank contains no live plants then you can use nitrate and phosphate resins to soak up those spare nutrients and starve the algae.
Preventing Brown Algae
- Add reverse osmosis water to a water source that is high in nitrate or silica.
- Change the water regularly.
- Clean the aquarium regularly.
Several fish and invertebrates will eat at least some species of hair algae. Some of the ones that I've found to be successful are Florida flagfish Jordanella floridae, Ameca splendens, and some mollies. Though most shrimp don't seem to eat the hair algae, I've found that ghost shrimp often will.
Zooplankton are tiny little animals (mainly crustaceans) that eat algae. Some aquatic insects also eat algae, while some are predators and eat other insects or zooplankton.
- Filtration. Filtration is the most fundamental way that we keep aquarium water clear.
- Chemical filtration. Chemical filtration works by absorbing or adsorbing things from the water.
- Bacteria. Some strains of bacteria can also be added to aquarium water to help to clear it.
- Fish.

Depending on those four factors you may have a fully grown fish in six months or it could take a couple of years.

For a single betta and a small algae eater, we recommend a size of 8 US Gallons (30 litres) or more. Otocinclus are common but are not a good choice for a 5 gallon IMO. The only things I personally would reccomend as tank mates for a betta in that size tank are shrimp or snails.
Otocinclus Catfish cannot live alone, and you will often see them grazing in groups. Otos swim together, showing their suckermouth full in action.
Plecos. Various South American suckermouth catfish are effective algae-eaters. The most popular are the various species sold as “plecos.” The namesake for the group, the common pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus), is an excellent algae-eater but is not the best choice for most hobbyists.
The young of many aquatic animals such as frogs, fish and aquatic (water-dwelling) insects eat algae as their main source of food. Some adult fish and other creatures also eat algae.
Red cherry shrimp colorful, peaceful, and easy to keep, but perhaps best of all, they will enthusiastically eat algae without harming your aquarium plants!
So to conclude this article: yes, guppies and betta fish can live in the same aquarium. You will have a bit more work feeding your betta separately and you will also need to purchase live plants, but it is doable.

Keep in mind there may always be some algae in the tank and perhaps even on your turtle's shell?trying to totally remove algae is futile and unnecessary. You can also add in animals that eat algae like snails and plecos. However, your turtle might eat them so you'll have to replace them continuously.

Unlike most snails common to the reef aquarium, the banded trochus snail can right itself when knocked over.
