Stay in the park. Then take Amboy Road over to Utah Trail and enter JTNP at the north end in 29 Palms. If there's nothing at the rim in your budget, check the town of Tusayan. The rim is better, but Tusayan is still doable to drive to after dark (closer than Williams etc).

The best times to visit the Grand Canyon are March through May and September through November when daytime temperatures are cool and the crowds are thin. If you decide to visit during the summer (the park's peak season), be prepared for hordes of tourists and very limited lodging availability.

The rim-adjacent towns of Tusayan and Williams, located 8 and 60 miles from the South Rim respectively, are the most practical options for booking your South Rim hotel, particularly if you are unable to secure a reservation at one of the Grand Canyon National Park lodges along the rim.
